Have suggested pgl to a few others as they are doing deals for May half term and beyond. our 3 got in on buy one get one free and they do family breaks too. kids are outside all day everyday doing something active. mine come back shattered after a week away. they do organise you but if you compare the cost with a week somewhere and the daily cost of an activity (lets be honest it can be £100 for 4 without blinking on a day out!) then it is good value. Mine love Osmington Bay. As for Hoseasons have seen a few negative posts over the weeks that suggest you are right - butlins but not as posh! They do have bags going on and you can just open the door and let the teenagers out on their own which would give you a break but beware of the extra charges for activities bits that some places sneak in. can mean it starts to add up. good luck.

Hoseasons sites vary hugely, I don't think that Hoseasons actually own the camps, more that they just market them, therefore some are great and some less so.

We stayed at Ogwen bank in Snowdonia a few years ago which is a Hoseasons site, the teens there were making their own fun, swimming in the river and just messing about kicking balls around and playing music on the river bank. There seemed to be a lot of local kids hanging out with them too. The Snowdonia range is literally on the doorstep for hiking and climbing.

Have you thought about Youth Hostelling? They run a programme of activities called "Do it 4 real" that is similair to PGL but usually cheaper and nearly free if you are on benefits.

ds1 has been on a PGL holiday and loved it, but I donm't really fancy it

I also don't fancy youth hostelling, have bad memories of that in the 70's! altho maybe its all changed since then

thanks for answering though!
