Tell me about Winterton on Sea....

A friend has recently bought a static caravan there and she's offered us the use of it at the end of May.

We've never been before and have no idea what's there. Friend has made a few suggestions but her children are older than ours so not all are suitable. Our DC's are 4 and 17 months.

Any suggestions would be gratefully recieved

Winterton is nice. Lovely beach. There's a sort of chip shack next to the beach and er, that's about it :o. But the beach really is lovely - good chance of seeing a seal bobbing about.

I live in Norfolk but have only been there once. From memory it is quite small. There is a nice beach and sand dunes. It is not to far from Great Yarmouth which is a typical seaside resort - cheap and tacky. But you could easily get around to the North Norfolk Coast which is lovely. Wells for example where you could go crabbing. There is a little railway which takes you along by the beach.

Hopefully someone else with better knowledge will be along soon.

in terms of exploring the local area, you want to go North up the coast rather than south. Don't stray any further towards Yarmouth. Or go inland - Broads etc.
There's a pool in North Walsham - a better one in Sheringham although that's a trek (nice town though).
Day trip to Norwich? We have a good castle - a very castley sort of castle.

\link{http://www.winterton-on-sea.net/\here}. Oh I have just remembered someone I know has a chalet there and spends most weekends there with her boys fishing.

Dh and I always fancied going \link{http://www.hermanusholidays.com/about.htm\here}

Thank you :)

I used to go crabbing as a child. That could be fun, if a little scary with a 17 month old leaning over the edge!! That Railway sounds worth a look too.

We're only going to go for 3 or 4 days at first so we won't have much time to travel too far from base. DD still naps for a couple of hours in the afternoon too so we need to fit activities into the morning mainly. Things in/close to Winterton would be best for this trip.

Apparently there is some sort of Dinosaur thing nearby too which DS might like. Will have to look it up.

The dinosaur park is nowhere near Winterton. It is closer to the outskirts of Norwich.

Blatherskite · 12/05/2011 15:50

Ah, then friend must be getting desperate to entertain her DS Grin

There really is nothing around Winterton, you will need to venture out. Could you not go out and just let dd sleep in her pram? The weather is usually quite kind here!

Your ds might like \link{http://www.pettittsadventurepark.co.uk/index.asp\this}. Much closer than the Dinosaur Park

Winterton. Loved staying there when my DC was 3. For just a few days you could get by with staying local. There are lovely walks through the sand dunes and the beach has lovely sand. The village and church is quite pretty to wander around. There is a nice playpark in the middle of the village and a great real ales pub where you can sit outside. The fish and chip shop is excellent. Horsey windpump (national trust) is just up the road, and a good short visit. The windpump itself is interesting and fine for toddlers to climb with supervision and there are boats aplenty to look at a nice short walk towards the broad. If you have rain (perish the thought) I would head to Great Yarmouth to visit the sealife centre (worth printing off special offers online in advance) in case you need them. It is such a lovely quiet place to chill 'though, if you have nice weather this might be enough. We spend 2 weeks each year a little up the coast with my boys and never get as far as a theme park or zoo, there's just so much to interest them on the beach.. roll on summer!

Blatherskite · 12/05/2011 22:02

I'll make sure we take the P&T so I can lie DD flat to sleep then. She won't manage the long naps she's used to I don't think but it'd be better than nothing.

DS loves the Sea Life center at Birmingham so the one at Great Yarmouht might be worth looking into. Pettitts looks very good.

Going to go investigate those websites some more....

Thank you everyone

Sealife Centre in Great Yarmouth is a dive, really really grotty. Sorry Balletlover! Blush
