Hi all,

Will be in Manchester for 4 days in July. Need to keep it cheap and cheerful. Does anyone know where to eat, what to do with a DP and a 5 year old DS that could be fun, but cheap!!! (poor emoticon)

Thanks Grin

Every time we've been there have been events in Picadilly Gardens where they also have water fountains the children can play in.

There are a few free galleries and museums too.

For eating out cheaply look for special offers that all the chains do (ask, Pizza Express, Strada etc -look on Money Saving Expert website)

oops posted too soon...I meant to add that just round the corner from Picadilly Gardens is Chinatown where there are some lovely restaurants in varying price ranges

There are places you can view the planes taking off instead the viewing park at Manc airport. Instaed of paying the £5 they charge, if you wants details, need a car to get there really.

Think the chinese restaurants (Yang sing etc) do lunch banquets. Usually £10 for adults and £5 for a child.

Manchester Museum free and usually has events. Ditto MOSI. There are quite a few supermarkets in Manc so could take a picnic to Museums and eat them there or in the gardens. Spinningfields had a manmade beach last summer which I missed but you never know there might be more. There is a roman ?? amphitheatre?? some sort of building which I can't remember and always see when hurrying past and think must go but never do. Also locks, quays and canal boats around Castlefield and Salford. Can't remember if Imperial War Museum is free.

imperial war museum is free
city art gallery usually has good kids activities
there are lots of good days out from manchester - the coast, peaks, lake district. where will you be staying, and will you be driving or on public transport?

go to the curry mile in rusholme for cheap eats - it's all lit up like blackpool in the evenings.

at lunchtime there are a fair few cheap and cheerful curry cafes round the back of Oldham St (about five to ten mins walk from Piccadilly gardens). And Manchester City Market in the Arndale shopping centre as a nice foodcourt, with lots of international food stalls, tables and chairs. There's also an Aldi in Manchester Arndale shopping centre (for cheap picnic ingredients).
