Newcastle WITHOUT kids...what to do?

Off to Newcastle without the dcs next Sunday. We're staying in the Hotel du Vin which I believe is on the banks of the Tyne not too far from the city centre. We're only there for 2 days so any tips on what to do in and around the city would be much appreciated. Also if anyone knows of any nice places to eat that would be good too.

Baltic art gallery - you will be able to walk there across the millenium bridge from your hotel, and wandering around the quayside, having drinks etc. walk up grey street into the city centre.

Nice restaurants

Cafe vivo next to the live theatre, not far from your hotel.

Blackfriars, barn Asia, Six at the Baltic all good too and still very central.

Thanks for that info. Wandering around the quayside stopping for a glass of wine sounds like absolute bliss...

Day in Durham - easy train ride away.

I'd thought of that too Colonel, any tips for what to see and do there - haven't been since I was 17.

Find out what is on at The Sage too. www.thesagegateshead.org/ Says it is in Gateshead, but only just on t'other side of Millenium bridge.

Day at the beach - metro to Whitley Bay, walk to Tynemouth (about 3 miles), pub lunch and pottering in Tynemouth, metro back. Often a flea market at Cullercoats metro, between Tynemouth and WBay.

V envious.

Used to live there, met DH there, was meant to go up for 10th wedding anniversary last year but DS was ill and MIL uncertain about looking after him.

Comedy Club?

If you are feeling very flush - [[http://www.fishermanslodge.co.uk/ Fisherman's Lodge] restaurant] is in a very lovely setting.

Fisherman's Lodge restaurant even.

Why go to Durham? Yes it's lovely but there is more than enough to do in Newcastle if you're only there 2 days.

Get the Metro to the coast (30 mins away) - Tynemouth is lovely, nice cafes, lovely beach, walk along the pier, go to the ancient priory and castle. Nice chips at Marshalls on Front Street.

In Newcastle, as well as walking around the quayside, walk up into town along Grey Street - finest street in the Uk apparently. Plus there are some nice shops at the top.

You could always get a boat up the Tyne, doing one of those river cruises. Not sure where you get on but you could look it up.

BikeRunSki - great minds!

Walking along the coast used to be one of my favorite lazy week end things to do. We'd have a picnic at the end of Tynemouth Pier. Crisps, hummous and can of wine! No coast in West Yorkshire, but there is a job!

Hotel du vin is lovely! I second the blackfriers, fantastic food and good value! And cafe vivo. I moved here in October and absolutely love this city. And the people make it. I consider myself a welsh/Geordie! You will have a fab time

I love Durham - that's why I'd want a day in Durham! Nothing much there as such, just a lovely city with lots of nice buildings to look at and a good walk along the river.
