Hello,I've not been to the island since I was a child, and would love to take my children for a few nights in the summer. Can anyone please recommend somewhere that is good value for money and family freindly to stay?
Thanks!

We got a rental apartment last summer, from these people

They have a good range of budgets/locations, if you're looking for self catering.

Shanklin or Sandown are nearest for the major attractions and beach.
Went to Ventnor last year and it was fine for 4 nights but boring for any longer - no crazy golf!

We're planning on Shanklin this summer as there aren't any decent houses available in Sandown (the major resort) for the week we need to go. If you want to take a car, then there's still plenty of choice.

love the iow yy to shanklin - best for young dcs

we would consider hotels or holidays parks I think, both have their pros and cons I guess. Just wondered if anyone had any recommendations so that I could look a bit more into costs.

can't say anything is that cheap tbh - we stay in hotels or nice b&bs but my dcs are older and it is a bit exp at times

i stayed in rookley, was a caravan park in the middle of nowhere but had nice atmosphere and pool, to be honest you are out and about so much you just really need somewhere to sleep

southeastastra · 20/03/2011 21:13

roughly paid £700 for week in august and ferry will be £120 odd too

That's the truble with school hols, everything is so dear! Definitely looking at self catering. Can't decide if holiday park for some evening entertainment or if we should stick with a house/cottage. Recommendations of either would be great...

If going anywhere near the train line, look into GroupSave tickets - 4 people can go for the price of 2. Cost only £100 for 4 adults to go from London, via the Portsmouth ferry, to Shanklin (and a delay meant we got 50% back...)

we stayed at Whitecliff Bay for a week last year. We hired a bell tent, which was fab but on the second night really strong winds came in. First thing next morning the manager came and asked if we wanted to transfer to a chalet (the weather was there to stay!)...no extra cost to us. They helped us move our stuff over, they were fantastic.
The chalets looked a bit dated, but were clean and had good facilities.
Club house on site (not our thing, didn't use it), good shop, indoor and outdoor pool, short (but steep) walk to a beautiful bit of secluded beach.

we had our car so not sure about public transport links if you're relying on that (there was a bus stop a couple of minutes from the park entrance).

and for stuff to do check out the family ticket for Black Gang Chine/Robin Hill Park, it's quite a bit up front for the weekly pass but you can go as many times as you want for the week and there is plenty to do to keep you occupied (more at Black Gang for the kids) Couple of good zoos on the island too.

Thanks that's brilliant, I will have a good look through and make some decisions!

cowes week in aug means major price hike and terrible parking but nice boats

ChippyMinton · 22/03/2011 10:52

this site is nice and quiet

nodes point is more of a holiday park, but with lots of owners it's not as busy as some of the others. And it's right next to a small but perfectly formed beach.
