Would this be weird? Kenilworth / Redditch question

You know that week in April where the country grinds to a --halt- celebrates the royal wedding, I was toying with the idea of a trip to Kenilworth Castle. It's too far to go for a day trip, but we could get an overnight at the Travelodge in Redditch for £19! and Kenilworth would be free cos we're English Heritage members. Then on the way back we could do WEst Midlands Safari Park perhaps (not free but still...)

Is Kenilworth Castle good for a day out?

And would we be mad to stay at the Redditch Travelodge? Tripadvisor reviews look very good, for a Travelodge, but is there anywhere nearby where we could eat with DS?

It's a few years since I've been to Kenilworth Castle. My memory of it is that it was an interesting visit, but not enough to take up a whole day, perhaps more of a half day visit.

I guess if we drove up in the morning, did the castle in the afternoon..

I wonder what else we could do round there. [ponders]

Kenilworth castle is nice but not a whole day out.

As Browning said "Oh to be in England now that April's there". You will be in Shakespeare country - loads of historic towns to see (Warwick, Coventry, Stratford, Henly-in-Arden) or beautiful walking countryside, alongside rivers or canals if you want. There are a fair few National Trust properties. Take your pick!

No idea about the Travelodge. It might be a good base but I would recommend that you don't rely on Redditch for a fun day out (one of my least favourite places!)

Oh! I googled the travelodge and it seems to be saying that the Redditch travelodge isn't actually in Redditch, it's out on the Saltway.

It is really beautiful countryside out there. Feckenham, just down the road, is a lovely little village. You are also not far from Inkberrow which has some nice pubs - one of them being the inspiration for the Bull in The Archers.
You are not far from Coughton Court which is owned by the NT: it will cost you to see the house but you can walk the grounds for free. Ditto Hanbury Hall.

I'm a bit Hmm about the Safari Park. It's not my thing but it must appeal to lots of people because there are always horrible trafic jams. You have been warned!

Oh I've been to Coughton Court, it's amazing isn't it. That's the place with the long gallery at the top isn't it?

Actually I'm completely confused by where it is.

If you googlemap Travelodge Redditch, yes, it's to the south but if you googlemap the postcode, B98 9BJ its to the north.

Confused

How weird!
I got it off googlemaps, and they said south.
However, north makes more sense: not only is it where the TL website thinks it is Grin but it is on the motorway side of Redditch.

Baddesley Clinton (NT) is very pretty when the daffodils are out. There is also Packwood House (NT).

Coventry has the Transport Museum and the Lunt Roman Fort, which might appeal to your DS.
