My husband has recently express his idea that we should take our kids to Butlins. He said that he went when he was little, so 30/32 years ago and have lovely memories.
I do not want to sound snob but Butlins sound to me a bit crap cheap. Consider i am not british, so maybe i am wrong. It is just that i dont want to end up in a place full of (allow me, please Grin ) chavs.

Is Butlins any good?

Lurk...cos as a newly single mum butlins seems like an easy option for me...which I really need this year.

That and I can pay with clubcard vouchers

Invisiblesoul · 20/02/2011 22:18

It's tradition where Im from! It's cheap and crap but you will LOVE it if you embrace it. I have many happy memories from butlins.

It's what you make of it. We went to Minehead. The pool is good and the rides are free. The beach is also opposite and the walk into Minehead is ok.
I enjoyed it for the fact I didn't have to cook or plan meals for a few days. Not the best food in the world but like I said it was a break for me!
Are your kids young? I think the best ages are around 3-6 ish

It can work out quite cheaply, I was a bit Hmm at the thought of it but our kids loved it so much. We went to the one in Skegness which has a gorgeous spa (and a very reasonably priced creche) so I had a session there. It did strike me as a bit chavtastic when we were waiting in the arrivals queue to check in and I was wondering why on earth I'd thought it'd be a good idea but once the irritating people were spread out Grin it was fine. The basic accommodation is very basic, so you may want to upgrade but it was fun for the family. You do have to embrace it for what it is, but the kids will probably thoroughly enjoy it and be oblivious to the tackiness of it!

There are sports activities, crafty sessions, shows etc as well as the swimming pool and they have an entertainment guide telling you which ages each activity is suitable for.

Snotgobbler · 21/02/2011 08:26

it isn't cheap but it is brilliant with kids. You don't have to pay for activities - shows in the day and night, swimming, funfairs, there are a few bits you can pay for but you don't need to.
Book a 3 night break to see if it's your kind of thing

noddyholder · 21/02/2011 08:28

No it is awful.I won a long weekend there a few years ago and at teh last minute we decided to go as we though ds might like it.How wrong we were It was awful and we ended up leaving after one night and coming home!

sailorsgal · 21/02/2011 08:50

If you go, go to Bognor. Stay in the nicer hotel. Quite nice though food a bit meh. I had a few nice treatments in the spa and hung out there quite a bit. It was not cheap, the hotel on bed and breakfast cost around £600 for 3 nights so we ended up spending around a grand altogether.

I will say that ds had a ball and keeps asking when we are going back. He also loves centre parcs.

coccyx · 21/02/2011 08:53

oooh no. center parcs much nicer

sailorsgal · 21/02/2011 08:55

I agree centre parcs much nicer but we had already been there so wanted a cheaper break in school holidays.

nannynick · 21/02/2011 09:12

I would not agree that it is cheap. I looked at going last April. I compared prices (Butlins Bognor v CenterParcs Longleat) and for the dates and accommodation I wanted, CenterParcs was cheaper.

Suppose you do need to factor in all costs, such as food and activities, so hard to compare as it depends on what you actually do once there. However if just comparing accommodation cost, then I found that CenterParcs was cheaper, which surprised me.

sea74 · 22/02/2011 00:28

Ok, ok, lets be honest. Not cheap, fine.... But is it chav???

OP posts:
noddyholder · 22/02/2011 21:44

It is the chaviest Will that do ya?Grin

sailorsgal · 22/02/2011 22:05

It wasn't as bad as I was expecting. A real mixture of people really.

youngjoly · 23/02/2011 21:46

Yes, there is definitely a real chav element there. But I also have friends with children in private school who take their girls there as their girls love it.

Also agree that the hotel at Bognor is the best way of doing it. Accommodation is actually quite nice.

There is non stop entertainment if you want it - usually you'll find a full blown panto / other big show each week, lots of mini shows throughout the day, puppet show, soft play, swimming, indoor rides for smaller children, fun fair rides for bigger children, organised activities for older children and families etc etc... All of this is free.

There are activities that you can pay for on top, such as bowling etc, but we never need to. We also try to get off site for a few days... because we need to Grin.

If you have children who love the characters (angelina ballerina, bob the builder etc etc), evening discos, soft play and swimming then they will have the time of their lives. For you - take a good book Grin.

As for price, Butlins is cheaper if you book way in advance. I booked a year in advance and paid £650 for a mon - fri visit in the hotel with dinner bed and breakfast. It was over £800, to book the same week at the same time for the basic accommodation at CP. I know we checked! That's not even including any activities at CP. That said, we still go to CP each year.

Agree Butlins is best for 3 - 8 year olds. I have a 4 and 7 year old daughters - they love it. We go each year for 'their' holiday and then to Cp for us.

BogWoppitt · 23/02/2011 22:11

we have just been to Minehead Butlins for the day. Great for a day but don't think I could stay there. It was loud! and busy.

There was a real mix of people...spotted lots of Boden/Joules as well as trackies/trainers. It wasn't the people that put me off as most people seemed reasonably polite and friendly.

Although the pool was good and my kids enjoyed the (free) fairground rides, I was surprisd that most other activities seemed to be charged as extra...even the bouncy trampoline thing.

It was so busy, I just wouldn't be able to relax there and let the DCs wander/have any freedom.

Maybe ok in term-time??

CointreauVersial · 23/02/2011 22:15

We just booked a PGL adventure holiday. Not expensive, includes full board and action-packed days of sporty/wet/fun activities. Maybe worth a try, as long as your dcs are 6+.
