London Underground travel

One of my friends has just told me that it is free for under 10's to travel on the underground is this right as we've always paid for ours when we've been.
We're going to London on Sunday so would like to know whether we need to pay or not!

They do travel free but I think you need to get a photocard and be accompanied by an adult...I am told it takes time to get one made. See www.tfl.gov.uk/tickets/14554.aspx for details..or call tfl (Transport for London) and ask them.
HTH.

I think you only need a photo card if they are 11 or over.

I travel with DS (9) on the underground all the time and the guards just open a gate for him. He looks his age and nobody has ever questioned it.

I think children of 11 and over get reduced fares with a photocard.

There's good info about this on the TFL site.

Sorry, MaMattoo's link is the info I was referring to.

It states that a child between 5 and 10 only needs a photocard if they are travelling without an adult or look older than 10.

The information is all very confusing. I live in London. I have 2 dc's (now teens). They used to get free travel on buses but only with a photocard. You don't get free travel on underground or trains, but you will need to have a photocard for reduced travel on trains/underground. I think Confused

Phone up.

It is confusing Monty.

My SIL took DS to a museum last week and spent around £15 on his train fares, when there was no need to pay at all. I only know it's free because DP used to work for TFL.

I've just applied for a photocard to prevent this happening again. They're £10 and strictly he doesn't need one, but it should be easier for him to swipe in and out of stations rather than ask a guard to open a barrier.

Nobody should be paying for their under 11s to use the underground or buses in London.

moragbellingham · 20/02/2011 11:44

How old are your DCs?
Mine just walk through the barrier with me. Although I haven't been stopped I should check out the regulations I guess.

Thanks for your replies!
We had a lovely day out and just took the kids through the barriers with us, no one questioned it so at least we know for next time :)
