Both of my parents are 65 this year and I want to find them a lovely small hotel somewhere in North Yorkshire that does really nice meals. They will only go for one night as they are home birds but I would love to find somewhere luxurious for them. Can anyone help?

I just passed a beautiful hotel today in Settle (dunno if that counts at North Yorkshire) but as we passed, I promised DH we'd be going back there for a romantic weekend - well just try to find the name of it.

Falcon Hotel, settle

Unicornlover · 29/01/2011 20:08

what about www.kingsheadrichmond.com. it's a really lovely hotel and food is beautiful as is the scenery. Richmond is known as the gateway to the Dales

What kind of budget? Bolton Abbey has several v.nice restaurants, lovely hotel and is so beautiful, however bit pricey & posh! Restaurant has michelin star i think, and erin o conner has stayed in hotel Wink

However not sure it counts as north yorkshire... close though?!

Thanks Doodlez and Unicornlover - both of those hotels look great. I think the budget would be about £200. I'll have a look at Bolton Abbey website and see if my budget will stretch!

ooohh definitely Frances Atkins at the Michelin starred Yorke Arms

www.yorke-arms.co.uk/

Or there is the:
The Star Inn at Harome
www.thestaratharome.co.uk/star_welcome.htm

or
The Inn at Whitwell (over the border in Lancashire but still very good!Wink

Estbek House, Sandsend
White Lion and Griffin, Whitby
Red Lion at Burnsall
Simonstone Hall in Hawes
The General Tarleton in Ferrensby
Blue Lion at East Witton
Frenchgate in Richmond (but see tripadvisor first - mine host seems to split people's opinions!)
Fallen Angel in Durham (again not Yorkshire but something different - always fancied taking DH1 to the Dr Who room...)

Could go on...

Might not be what you are looking for but I really like the Victoria Hotel on top of the cliffs at Robin Hoods Bay. Grand old hotel with great views, and when I went great service too. But couldn't tell you what the food is like, although the chippy at the bottom of the hill does great curry sauce Grin

Changeisagoodthing · 29/01/2011 20:24

Where do they live?

Big place north Yorkshire ( biggest county in England- equivalent of London to Birmingham one way and london to Cornwall or somewhere like that the other way)

Tne star at harome is acknowledged to be the best but not much good if they live in skip ton.

there's a wonderful posh B&B in Ampleforth called Shallowdale House that dh and I went to, if they don't like the formality of a big hotel.
It's run by a lovely middle aged couple - two men - who do the cooking themselves. There isn't a menu - you tell them beforehand if there's anything you don't like and they cook something lovely (they are brilliant cooks) and you eat it in the guest dining room, can't remember if there were any other guests there or not when we were there. It's all very beautifully served and relaxing because there is none of the 'having to catch the attention of a waiter' stuff you can get in a proper restaurant.
it's probably better value than a proper hotel too.
depends if they enjoy the formality and semi-public nature of a proper hotel or not.

the Star at Harome is good if you like offal.... it's very very good at a particular style of cooking; I've eaten there but never stayed there.

there's a new one in Harome, The Pheasant, which we are thinking about going to except the reviews from a year ago are superb and the ones from the last couple of months, not so much. It does have an indoor pool though....

Mytholmroyd · 29/01/2011 21:11

I dont like offal - thanks for the tip seth - shall cross that off my wishlist of places to go!

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 29/01/2011 21:23

they don't just do offal
just that they are exceptionally good at it (I had brains when I went there - yum!)

Mytholmroyd · 29/01/2011 21:41

That's brave Shock I would never pass the bush tucker trial I am afraid - a total wimp! Okay will reinstate but with note to self to stick to the fish!

Thanks for all the ideas! I will be checking all those out in a minute. They live in South Yorkshire and my brother is arranging a classic car (MGA I believe) for them which you collect from near York. I was looking for something a bit further away so that they could drive the car for a while in lovely countryside and then have a meal and a night in a hotel. I think they would prefer somewhere that's not too formal but not so quiet they felt self conscious. Thanks again everyone for all the tips.
