Arriving at Heathrow with toddler, need connection advice

Greetings, husband here posting on behalf of wife currently too frazzled. We will be visiting the UK in June, which is where I hail from so I am fairly familiar with Heathrow and the rail system... but not before with a 1-year-old in tow.

Our destination is in southeast Essex and I am scratching my head pondering the easiest way to get there. Were I by myself I'd take the Picadilly line and transfer through the Underground to Liverpool Street. But we will be towing not just the 1-year-old in stroller but substantial luggage and a hypercritical grandmother. Plus, coming off an 11-hour flight from 8 time zones away. Making transfers at major Tube stations... I don't think so.

There is no bus from Heathrow to our destination. I am leaning toward hiring a minivan but quail at the thought of negotiating the M-25 after that amount of sleep deprivation and total driving experience in the UK that can be measured in days. Plus there is the amount of time driving takes... with the flight arriving in the morning I suspect that trains would be much faster if the connections could be made to work.

Will the porters at Heathrow load baggage onto the Heathrow Express? Is there an option at Paddington (porters, taxi - guessing) for getting to Liverpool Street and onto a train with help with the bags all the way? I need to map this out in advance because going more than a very short distance or trying to negotiate any stairs with that luggage under those circumstances could be extremely trying after a lengthy overnight flight during which we have likely slept little, and I would sooner DW not be stretched beyond the breaking point at the outset of her visit to my home country. I gotta get creative here.

Have you explored how much a mini cab would cost? (A mini cab from your destination local area to pick you up, not a black cab as that would be a fortune). It might not be much more than hiring a vehicle, it would save a lot of angst, although it would have to have a chair for the baby.

Do you have any rellies in the country that might pick you up for a generous payment for petrol?

How about Addison Lee or similar? To take you from Heathrow to Liverpool Street. You can also book a child seat (maybe at extra cost, I don't know).

Heathrow terminal 1 (just guessing) to Liverpool Street station, £77.10 In comparison, Heathrow express would cost you around £20 each for a single, plus another £4 each for a zone 1 single.

There may be local minicab firms who are cheaper, I don't know.

I've never booked one of their cabs, but have friends who have.

I've never done this but enjoyed looking all this up. Grin

addison lee are really expensive from heathrow. call a local cab firm from your final destination. not sure how far se essex is but we pay about 45.00 and travel from north london.
it will be a proper hassel going the route you have mentioned with trains etc.
phone the cab firm and they will give you a quote, the heathrow express will be expensive for you all any way.
£58 FARES ON HEATHROW EXPRESS if ordered on line then £18 for a porter then your rail ticket to essex!

We have used Addison Lee before and found them very good, they are all Ford Galaxies and one of them has a seat with child harnesses on which would be suitable for your 1 year old.

Or try one of these:

I notice one of them are doing 20% off if you book before 31st Jan.

Believe me after being on the airplane you want to get to your destination with the least hassle ASAP!

Thanks for the info. Online quote from holidaytaxis.com = £175. It will take a while to evaluate that. I know things are more expensive there but still...

Get number of mini-cab company local to your destination and organize to have them pick you up. It will almost certainly be cheaper than public transport for 3 adults and lots of luggage. And obviously will be much less stressful. One note....be prepared that depending on your airline, you may not be allowed to take your stroller on the plane with you (I was always allowed to with British Airways, but never with Virgin). In which case you will have to walk close to a mile within the terminal before reaching the baggage area where there are trolleys and where your stroller will exit. You will have to carry your toddler all that distance. Not fun. It helps to have an umbrella stroller (even if you check a fancier one, bring a $15 one to take on plane with you) and beg to have it put in the closet if they suggest gate checking it. Make sure you bring enough diapers and baby food for hours in airport before and after (not just for flight).
