Can anyone recommend a weekend away in UK, end of Jan?

Hi everyone

DP and I want to go away for a dirty romantic weekend to celebrate our anniversary at the end of January. We live in London and don't have a car so it needs to be somewhere we can easily get the train to, and somewhere not so big we can walk around/take public transport while we're there.

Love being by the sea so was thinking maybe Weymouth or some other seaside town, maybe Bournemouth... does anyone have any recommendations? Of either places to go or specific places to stay?

We've been to Edinburgh, Sheffield and Bristol fairly recently, have a trip to Liverpool planned so think we'd rather go South.

Can anyone help? Smile

Does it have to be in UK. In your situation living in London I would be getting the Eurostar to Paris or Brussels.

Cheeser · 13/01/2011 11:04

Good suggestion NL but it's working out really expensive - £228 for returns for the two of us, just for the eurostar. Two nights' hotel on top and it'd be quite a lot, before we've even allowed for food and drink etc. Thanks for the suggestion though Smile

Actually thinking about it, depending on where we go in the UK the trains could still be quite expensive. Hmm

Hastings? Only 1h 45m out of Charing Cross.

You can walk round the Old Town, look at the galleries, look at the caves on the hill, there is an aquarium and some museums should you need. If you stick round the Old Town their are plenty of restaurants. Weather has been Ok the last few days and you might even get a bit of sunshine! (Disclaimer: it might also be perishing with a freezing cold wind right off the sea.)

Have a fab time!!

Brighton - lots of nice hotels for romance - Drakes,Hotel Du vin etc and lots of restaraunts, shops and nightlife as well as the coast and the beautiful Pavillion all less than an hour from London so if anything goes wrong (eg kids getting sick) you can be back really quickly.

You can often pick up really cheap train tickets depending what times you travel at (check southern and first great western). Hotels often do deals this time of year too (check VisitBrighton)

Cheeser - it was the cost of the train that was making me think Paris an option! If you were going to come to York for example it is pricy. Brighton sounds like a good idea though. Also I remember going to Rye as a child and thinking it was lovely.

Brighton

Oxford

Cheltenham

Bath

How about Cornwall - very romantic and good offers everywhere this time of year!
There are some good spa hotels around as well... Try St. Ives, Newquay or Falmouth!

Ooh lots of lovely ideas - thank you everyone!! Before I checked back here last night I was thinking about Poole, but DP told me he's already been there. So thinking more about other places - Brighton is a good one, we went there years ago in our first flush of romance Grin

ooh OXFORD! That's a great idea Rindercella. Think Cornwall's a bit far lamby, thanks though - no car and train takes hours.

Thanks all, off to investigate trains now.. Smile

Smile not exactly by the sea though is it?!

There's a Malmaison there or you could try The Crazy Bear which is a few miles from the city centre.

East Anglia, somewhere lovely like Southwold or Aldeburgh or Walberswick, or North Norfolk ..... OOOOOOO, lucky you.

Bungay in Suffolk. You'd need to get the train to Beccles and then a taxi.

We went last February for two nights, and had a nice time doing very little.

Isle of Wight buy a ticket from Waterloo to Ryde promenade station includes your cat crossing, Average travel time around one and half hours (many people commute to London from IOW). Lots of lovely flats avaliable for weekend only renting. Miles of empty beaches.
