it's my 5th wedding anniversary in march and have organised family to look after ds overnight so dh and I can have our first night away together since he was born so I'm now trying to find somewhere to go...

Looking for a romantic hotel/b&b with a good restaurant nearby we can go for a meal, budget not too much of an issue but needs to be within about 1 hour of south east london (either by train or car) as don't want to be too far from ds just in case (pfb Grin)

any suggestions??

thank you! Smile

We stayed at Amberley Castle some years ago, it was lovely and the hotel restaurant was great. I think it would be within an hour's drive of South London.

We've also stayed here at Alexander House but it was a long time ago and has been revamped since then, however it was wonderful then!

Have a lovely time Smile

Have a look at Mr & Mrs Smith

lindsell · 09/01/2011 21:05

thank you!

love the look of amberley - just the sort of thing I love but unfortunately no rooms available for the night we need

alexander house looks possible or maybe one of the other ones in the same group - like the idea of the spa!

dastardly - I've had a look at that site thanks but nothing really seems quite right (I'm a bit fussy Grin)

anyone got any other ideas?

Aw that's a shame.

I haven't stayed here but a friend told me that Bailiffscourt is wonderful.

Don't think it's within an hour (might be just over) but we've also stayed at Careys Manor in the New Forest twice and had a lovely stay both times.

Alexander House WAS beautiful... we got married there 9 years ago and it was truly wonderful. A real country house hotel with cosy sitting rooms and fires and CHARACTER!!! Now it has been butchered and turned into any other corporate hotel which is souless.

I second Bailiffscourt though or maybe Ockendon Manor which is part of the same chain.

We had the best weekend of our liveshere. Farnham in Surrey - go for the Scarlett Suite if you can afford it. AMAZING.

room service is ace and very reasonable too

If your budget is really good you might be able to get a table at the Fat Duck and a night at one of their recommended B&Bs.

lindsell · 09/01/2011 22:45

Thanks for that advice mrspink - I don't like corporate spoilt hotels so will give that a miss

Bailiffscourt looks lovely but I think maybe a bit far away thinking of what the traffic is like on a fri eve out of London! Ockendon looks possible though will look at that further

Catinboots - like the look of the rooms there but not sure about the restaurant, will have a look at others nearby

Dilysprice - ooh now that's an interesting idea, hadn't thought of choosing the restaurant first, though not sure budget is quite up to fat duck levels Grin

Thanks all some interesting ideas, any more welcome!

We went to the Malmaison in Reading for our sneaky night away, very romantic and luxurious and the brasserie food is to die for! They do special rates on Sunday nights.

Also have a look at fullersinns.com...all individual small hotels owned by Fullers the brewers, but very classy and chic.

orienteerer · 10/01/2011 19:19

This might be rather over budgetGrin?

orienteerer · 10/01/2011 19:20

Why not go into central London?

orienteerer · 10/01/2011 19:24

Or how about Winchester, easy by train. Could try the Wykeham Arms or Hotel du Vin?

bibbitybobbityhat · 10/01/2011 19:25

I'd deffo go in to the centre of town (also live in SE London) for a special treat. Maybe The Cadogan Hotel, or somewhere in Regents Park or Marylebone.

bibbitybobbityhat · 10/01/2011 19:26

Gosh at the Wykeham Arms. That's gone a bit upmarket since my studenty drinking days Grin.

Is Pennyhill Park within an hour of south London? It's in Bagshot and has a spa etc.
