you can come and camp on our frontroom floor

we live near dumfries

Wellsfield Farm Holiday Lodges, Denny, Stirlingshire.

Ideal for travelling to Glasgow, Stirling, Edinburgh, great travel links in Stirling. I am not sure about pets though. The nearest small town Denny was voted most dismal town 2010 though!!!!

TheUnmentioned · 29/12/2010 22:01

There's here too - dont know if it takes dogs.

Very convenient for Fife / Edinburgh / Glasgow. The local train station is called Dalmeny.

Habbibu · 29/12/2010 22:01

I was thinking about Aviemore too - easy on train, loads of accommodation nearby, none of which I can access atm!

SharonGless · 29/12/2010 22:02

You are going to be lucky to get only one change on a train to be honest. I presume you want something nearer to the borders then as its a bloody long way from Manchester to Inverness with our DC never mind from London.
My advice would be to work out areas that are easily accessible by train and then look from there - will start looking for you.
PS what dates are your Easter hols as they are different in Scotland

JeelyPiece · 29/12/2010 22:03

North Berwick is good for a beach holiday with children and not too far from the border. Some holiday lets here.

Or if you want to go further west or north, Loch Lomond or Glencoe/Fort William are beautiful and not short of holiday cottages/lodges. You can get a sleeper from London Euston to Glasgow Central and Fort William is another 4.5 hours north. For Loch Lomond you would change for a train to Balloch (any West Coasters with better knowledge feel free to correct!)

JeelyPiece · 29/12/2010 22:05

Yes Wilf and they are the cause of much muttering whenever sighted!

fluffles · 29/12/2010 22:10

east coast mainline stops in dunbar if you want seaside, or take the inverness train (one per day) from euston and go to aviemore.

i have had my eye on this place for a while:
www.pinebankchalets.co.uk/
really easy from the train station and you can walk everywhere (rare for such secluded lodges)

lisad123isasnuttyasaboxoffrogs · 29/12/2010 22:11

because we can go straight from here to Edinborough we can get most places with one or 2 changes from what I see.
8th April is last day for my kids at school, so think we are a week ahead of scotland in school holidays. Having a good look now :)
thank you all

Have you got a family railcard - if not make sure you get one. Try southern rail for cheap train tickets - if you book 3 months in advance you get really good deals. Our return fare for our family for Man to Inv on train was £67 so you could use rest of money that you have budgeted on travel on accommodation or a treat somewhere

midnightexpress · 29/12/2010 22:13

Scottish school hols vary. Ours are off the first two weeks of April I think.

What sort of things do you want to do? Beach? Walking? Or would you prefer to be near a town/village?

Carrotsandcelery · 29/12/2010 22:13

We have never had a bad holiday from www.sykescottages.co.uk

I can heartily recommend Kamba Cottage near Kirriemuir and know they welcome dogs. They also had 2 friendly Shetland ponies and a Llama which you can go and visit and feed and pet.
They have a pool which you can use and heated kennels for the dogs if you need to leave the dogs for a day out.
I wouldn't like to be there without a car though - that would be the hitch.

Carrotsandcelery · 29/12/2010 22:14

Yes our holidays are 2 April for 2 weeks.

lisad123isasnuttyasaboxoffrogs · 29/12/2010 22:19

I would rather a walking type place, we do seaside alot and as far from shops as possible too.

TheUnmentioned · 29/12/2010 22:22

DEFINITELY Aviemore.

JeelyPiece · 29/12/2010 22:27

If it's walking you like then Glencoe would be good if you can handle the extra 4.5 hours on the train north from Glasgow. There are some cottages here. Ballachulish is a village but very small and there are loads of beautiful walks of varying difficulties close by. You would be next to Loch Leven and Loch Linnhe too. I love it there.

JeelyPiece · 29/12/2010 22:28

Which is better, Glencoe or Aviemore... there's only one way to find out... Xmas Smile

BilboBloggins · 29/12/2010 22:37

Glad you didn't get the Strathyre lodge - there is sod all to do for kids there and it's off the beaten track so no use if you don't have transport. It is one of my favourite places in the world but not with the kids in tow.

tigersteapot · 29/12/2010 22:45

I vote for Glencoe too. Ballachulish would be lovely. If you've never been to Scotland then the scenery is going to take your breath away. You could easily take the bus or train up to Fort William for the day. One of my favourite places in the whole world.[homesick emoticon]

seb1 · 29/12/2010 22:54

Tralee Bay

lisad123isasnuttyasaboxoffrogs · 29/12/2010 22:58

Bilbobloggins, that was the while point Grin take some bored games, cards, do some cooking, walk the dog. And it was easy reach of train station.
Some of these, once you get to prices are a good £400-£500 and that I just dont have.
Yes planning to get Family RC, and whole trip was going to be £76 for train return.

There are some beutiful places on these links, Im very jealous.

And thank you for offer of your livingroom but im sure after 30mins with my lot you would be kicking us out.

Carrotsandcelery · 29/12/2010 23:01

There are loads of activities for kids in Aviemore.
Ballachulish would be more peaceful though.
