Loch Lomond

I'm off to Loch Lomond next week with DH. We're staying in the Forest Holiday Cabins in Ardgartan. We're going for 3 nights. I've never been before so don't know anything about the region.

Can anyone suggest anything to do or see?

Have a meal at the original Loch Fyne restaurant at Cairndow. It's not far from Ardgartan and is much much better than the chain restaurants with lovely views.

squashedfrogs - thank you for the suggestion. I've just looked at the website and it looks lovely. DP (NOT DH as I wrote in the OP!) loves the idea too. I'll call them tomorrow to book.

You could go to Luss as well, nice place for a little wander round. It is where they used to film "Take the High Road".

You could take a boat trip round the loch - most leave from Balloch but possibly from Loch Lomond Shores as well, you can hire canoes etc there too. Not sure if the seaplane is still running, lovely to see it land on the loch and think can book short flight on it from Glasgow over the loch too if fancied it! Try driving round to the east side of the loch, much quieter than the main road on the other side, with a few nice beaches to stop off at and do some stone skimming.

You could stroll up Ben Lomond. It's a Munro (over 3000ft) but only a little one.

Take a drive over to Oban, go via Bridge of Orchy for a little walk, also stop at Dalmally, drive into the village, park at the station and walk up Monument Hill, easy walk, breathtaking views. My grandparents lived in this village, it is lovely. Back in the car, a couple more miles along stop at Kilchurn Castle, a beautiful ruin on a little promontory on Loch Awe. Oban is nice for a mooch around, it's a small fishing port.

North of Oban at Port Appin is the Pierhouse Hotel, fabulous views lovely food.

Inverary is also worth a visit, there is a nice walk up to the castle.

Going south along Loch Lomond, towards Balloch, are the Cruin Hotel and Duck Bay Marina, both are right on the waters edge with lovely views and do reasonable food.

Oh yes, and there is a fabulous teashop in Luss.

The seaplane was still running when I was there at the end of Aug, might stop for winter?

Just checked and seaplane running til November - will be visiting area myself in October and am sorely tempted...
