Can anyone recommend me a UK holiday?

We want to go away for around 5 days in November but are stuck for ideas on where to go.

We have been all over Dorset/Devon/Cornwall/Somerset and have visited the midlands. Last year we went to York which we loved but we dont want to drive any more than 3-4 hours (we live in Surrey) If anyone knows of some good areas which will be ok in November then please recommend them.

We have never been to Norfolk or Wales but we are clueless to which areas are nice.

Norfolk - we went to wells next the sea...never done Norfolk before. It was fab - loads to do and amazing beaches. We went on a steam train ride, saw seals and went on the beach

Pembroke is lovely. We went to Saundersfoot this summer and we were blown away by the number of gorgeous beaches everywhere. Tenby is quite an attractive little town.

Pinkglow · 21/09/2010 12:51

Thankyou cazzybabs - that sounds really good. Ill have a look at that, cheers

What sort of thing do you want to do when you get there? Towns, culture, attractions? Or Walking, outdoors etc?

The N Norfolk coast is fantastic if you wnat long walks along vast beaches, nice pubs, birdwatching and a ferry trip to see seals. Not good on culture or indoor attractions.

Pinkglow · 21/09/2010 12:57

A bit of both really Blu - as long as we are within an hour drive of a largish town or city then we can normally have the best of both worlds.

Hunstantan and Norwich are within a hours drive (I think)...

also Pensthorpe Nature Reserve was also good for a day out - loads to do

cazzybabs · 21/09/2010 13:00

ohh or what about the forest of Dean

HowsTheSerenity · 21/09/2010 13:18

I cannot stop raving about the Isles of Scilly. One of my most favourites places in the UK.

HowsTheSerenity · 21/09/2010 13:19

Oops did not read OP properly. Scilly to far then.

You could stay in Wells-next-The-Sea or one of the coastal villages, such as Blakeney or Cley, and Norwich is an hour away. Norwich Castle is great, Norwich City Centre v interesting in the old parts, and some good shopping areas round the Royal Arcade and the streets leading to it.
Sheringham is a pleasant little resort, excellent beaches for walking are Wells to Holkham, and back trough the pinewoods, Brancaster, walk along the sea bank at Thornham, great bowls of mussels in the pubs.
Holt is a lovely small Georgian town with chi chi shops, ditto Burnham Market

BUT N Norfolk can be deadly if it rains every day. There is the steam museum, with fabulous steam driven dance hall organs and roundabouts and....um....some of the churches are interesting to look round? The museum at Cromer is tiny, and the Glandford Shell Museum tinier!

Seal trips from Morston are great, you always see seals.

Fimbo · 21/09/2010 14:08

I would stay in Norwich itself and do a day trip up to the North Norfolk coast. As Blue says its fine if the weather is good but if it is not there really isn't that much to do.

Pinkglow · 21/09/2010 14:22

Ok I have ruled out Norfolk (because it might rain and it sounds like it would make a good spring/summer trip)

At the moment Im looking at south wales and Forest of Dean/Shropshere area.

Hopefully one of those will fit our needs.

Yes, N Norfolk definitely better for spring / summer, IMO. (and I love N Norfolk)

cazzybabs · 21/09/2010 17:40

having done wales i would say there is even less to do in rainy weather than norfolk

Fimbo · 21/09/2010 17:41

Scores Wales off potential holiday list. Smile
Really cazzy? I live near Norwich and I am positively crawling the walls in the winter time. We end up going on day trips to Ikea!

cazzybabs · 21/09/2010 18:07

I am sure there aren't many places where there is lots to do in winter unless you go to a big city - London/Edinburgh - no idea about cardiff... or you buy good waterproofs, DVDs etc or go somewhere like Centreparcs where it doesn't matter

OrmRenewed · 21/09/2010 20:03

Never been to Pembroke in winter but I do tend to like beaches in lovely winter weather. And walking along cliff paths to watch the waves crashing against cliffs. If you want 'made' stuff to do I guess you need a city.

cazzybabs · 21/09/2010 20:05

OrmRenewed - me too! take a kite, warm clothes, wellies, hot chocolate - fab

susitwoshoes · 21/09/2010 20:10

is the Peak District to far? Beautiful countryside and I think quite a few rainy day things to do too.

Pinkglow · 22/09/2010 12:43

we were looking at the Peak District but its a little too far (our toddle HATES being in the car for too long) York last year was perfect but he was much smaller then.

We are set on forest of dean/shropshere area as there are plenty of holiday cottages in the area and towns like Rye, Hay, Hereford etc are all in the area.

thankyou again for everyones help, my husband is set on Norfolk next spring Smile

The Wye Valley is lovely - also the Malvern/Worcester/Hay kind of area is great!

wearymum200 · 27/09/2010 20:08

Monmouthshire? Great walking/ castles if weather clement; if not, day trips to Bristol/ Cardiff. Hay, Hereford reachable too. Beware driving distance to Shropshire if your toddler doesn't like the car. We used to live in Shrewsbury and I love Shrops, but it takes a surprisingly long time to get there and a very long time to get around it

LOML · 28/09/2010 12:12

I Know you said you had already been to Cornwall but if you have kids Glynn Barton Cottages are offering 5 day swimming courses for children from Nov - March included in your weekly rental. Great place, lovely cottages with lots of facilities. www.glynnbarton.co.uk

LPJ · 06/10/2010 11:02
