What's Weston Super Mare like? Much to do?

We are taking the DC's to see my friend in Bristol but thought we would have a couple of days by the seaside and thought we would stay nr Weston Super Mare but I never been before.

Any recommendations on where to stay and what to do?

Sorry if I offend any W-S-M Mumsnetters, but, in a word, Don't!!!

Weston seafront was like a building site when we went there from Bristol for the day in August, as they are building the new pier and they were also doing loads of road-works. I don't know what you're into or how old your children are, but it's difficult to find anywhere decent to eat, and the tide is hardly ever in Grin. It's not strictly on the coast, it's actually on the Bristol Channel, and has earned the nickname Weston-Super-Mud around these parts. It's got a lot of amusement arcades, a shopping centre and an aquarium but not much else to entertain kids if the weather is grotty.

Head a bit further down the coast to North Devon, not much further away from Bristol but a lot nicer. The coast around Exmoor and down to Croyde is beautiful, lovely sandy beaches for the children to explore and cosy pubs in pretty harbour villages. Well worth the extra hour in the car.

The new pier is finished now and is supposed to be great.

You will find plenty there to keep little ones busy.

Croyde et al is all very preetty but not much there in the rain.

Thanks, we have found a caravan to hire which is good news. Think it is on the Haven site so we can use the swimming pools.

Children are 8 and 1 so we have planned a trip to Bristol Zoo as well.

DP and I went for a weekend in late August this year. We absolutely loved it. We stayed in a lovely, seafront B+B and had two delicious meals out; fish and chips one night(Papa's, very, very popular so book ahead if you go) and Greek meze the next night. The beach was nice too, the sea was in often, only once when we walked by was it out, the sand sculpture festival was there and they were spectacular.

We drove over to Cheddar Gorge for a day, I had planned on going on to something else once we'd seen the caves but we were enjoying it so much we ended up staying there all day. The caves were fascinating, very well organised too, there's a special tour laid on for kids so they can get into it. The cheese factory is worth popping into too, the only cheddar made in Cheddar, can you believe it! Tasters available too, yum.

We're deffo going again and will take DD next time. We saved Wookey Hole for when she's there as it looked more geared towards kids, Jerry Cottle of Cottle's Circuses has taken over and made it very razmatazzy; groovy lighting and pirates etc, fun for the kids.

As you may be able to tell, I heartily recommend it.

Thanks David, that sounds great. Excited now!

Wookey Hole is good value.

Bristol Zoo is OK , there is also Noahs Ark Faarm Zoo which i good,

Forgot to add: if you pre-book Wookey Hole online you get 10%(maybe more, can't remember) off your tickets and get to queue jump straight through to the front. There should be some promo leaflets in the reception of the camp site too, some have money off coupons attached, all adds up.

Hope you have a great time, come back and tell us about it, I'm still well enamoured with Weston. Smile
