Lake District with 11 month old

Hi

We're going to the Lakes at the end of the month with DS who'll be 11 months by then. Staying in Ambleside.

Can anyone recommend any short easy walks we can do (we'll have a carrier and an all terrain pushchair)? We'll be driving so they don't have to start in Ambleside.

Thanks!

Try a walks around some of the smaller lakes, Rydal Water and Buttermere come instantly to mind.

You could walk up the Langdale Valley along the valley floor, but I wouldn't recommend going up (I have actually seen people with baby carriers at the lake under Pavey Ark, must be mad Shock).

I seem to recall that there were some nice woodland walks north of Grange in Borrowdale.

Arnside and Silverdale have some nice walks as well.

I love the langdale valley but no way would I attempt to go up. We went last christmas and saw a couple going up to stickle tarn (which is the one below pavey ark) with a little baby. Crazy!

I used to do a lot of walking in the lakes - one of my pet peeves was what people wore and did. We had a couple in our walking group that decided to no Harrison Stickle in trainers and shorts with a baby carrier! (in their mitigation, they were German and thought that the hill would be really easy as it is much lower than the german mountains)

Even the "easy" hill which is Wansfell Pike just east of Ambleside I wouldn't really want to try lug a baby up as well as myself (there is a little bit of scrambling right by the top).

I seem to recall that there is a fairly nice lakeside path along Coniston and a couple of nice pubs on the return (can't remember if child friendly).

We go to the lakes every year but as we always do big walks, it's difficult to think what to do with a baby. laimsdaddy we too get annoyed at crazy people not dressing properly. We went up old man Coniston last year and a woman with kids dressed for a day at a shopping centre stopped us for directions on the way up... Now I know it's busy and you can pretty much follow the queue, but no map, no compass?? Madness.
We've been to Coniston before so will check out the lake and do Tarn Hows.

Thanks!

I agree about Tarn Hows, although National Trust Car park very expensive with no other parking nearby. Does get busy though.

If you go to Wainwrights pub just off the Langdale Estate, there is a really nice walk alongside the river with no passing traffic (the road is busy)which brings you out at Elterwater and another rather nice pub. You can do it okay with a buggy - I have done on a number of occasions.

Was also going to suggest Tarn Hows and Coniston to Torver by lakeshore.

We did catbells with a 2 year old in a backpack (plus a 5 and 7 year old)

Tarn hous, Grisdale forest

We did a walk from Ambleside to some waterfalls (i think Stock Ghyll) and then on up (it was quite far) to a beautiful view over Windermere - again with dd3 in a backpack

We also walked to Beatrix Potter's house.
