have booked a cottage in Wells next the sea in late August.
hopefully weather will be ok and we can do lots of beaching, but would like some ideas of other things to do and see

def going on the light railway as the boys will love that (5, 2.5 and 1)

any other must-do's in the area?

We went to this fab place called bewilderwood. I'm sure it must have it's own website.

holkham beach, woods if rainy, (and reet fancy food at the victoria)
best beach imo is brancaster
there's a fab, family friendly cafe/restaurant in holt - ace pizzas
the pebbly beach at salthouses is the kind of place where there's no such thing as bad weather - there is also a great fish and chip shop there and cookies crab shop seafood cafe

I was hoping someone would ask... Dinosaur Adventure!

It was a genuine full day out for DD(4) and DS(2) - really large adventure playground, then a dinosaur trail through the woods, through to lovely animal section/petting zoo. Was really quiet when we went (term-time), staff were friendly, great animal demos throughout the day, deer safari (extra charge but worth it for ride on large army trucks).

The only thing that lets it down is the cafe, but we took a picnic and there are loads of tables, plus a covered area if the weather does it stuff.

And you can do it on Tesco tokens, so cost is minimal.

Oh god, the tank museum... I let DP take us there on the last day. I thought I was hiding my excruciating boredom quite well until another woman walked in with her husband and family, saw my face, let out a scream of laughter and said 'That face says it all!'.

Cromer was a big hit with us - great beach with surf school for wannabe dude-watching, fab pier you can go crabbing from and visit lovely RNLI lifeboat house and museum. Couple of nice coffee shops, too and a lovely gallery/nice things shop called the Garden House near the front. Not forgetting the hop-on, hop-off land train that my DCs loved.

As soon as I saw the post saying North Norfolk I was going to suggest 'Go to Wells'!! It's a fab town, loads of character and oodles to see and do. All the above suggestions are great and can also add to the list:

  • Boat trips out to see the seals at Blakeney
  • You can walk/cycle along the beach all the way from Wells to Holkham and beyond, through the pine woods and along the shore.
  • Crabbing (fishing for crabs) on the harbour wall - a very good low cost all day activity with just a bucket, crab line and any variety of bait!
  • Pitch and Putt course half way down the mile straight between the town and the beach, but I guess that's maybe better for older kids and parents - although there's also a crazy golf at the beach car park which your 5 year old may enjoy?
  • Lots of bucket and spade shops, arcades and a yummy donut shop/window and a fab fish and chip shop right on the main street.
  • Board walk through the salt marshes at a number of RSPB sites around Wells and towards Hunstanton.

That's all I can think of right now, but we had many happy camping holidays in Wells throughout my childhood and teenage years - it's a fab place and I love it there!

Sheringham to Holt steam train is lovely - Sheringham has a fab sandy beach if the tide is out. If you don't want to pay to go on the train you can just pay for a platform ticket - or hang over the wall! Is a pleasant ride though, well worth doing, I think that the price allows you to travel all day. there is a model railway at Holt station too

if you are NT members the houses at Felbrigg and Blickling are worth a look - you can hire bikes to explore the grounds at Blickling which could be fun

Sheringham Park is also NT property, nice gardens to walk through

Priory Maze at Beeston Regis not bad - quite nice grounds with plants etc and a maze and tearooms - was quite pricey if I remember rightly

I've never been but Wroxham barns has both indoor and outdoor play for a mixed weather day - mum has taken DC there when they were small
