Is anyone here tutoring their incoming year 7 over the holidays? I have heard some are trying to tutor their DS and DD to get them into better sets. I think they need a brain break but I have friends who are worried that primary didn't do their job and are now tutoring. I've never done tutoring but now I am worried I should be.

It might depend on schools but at my child’s they can move up and down sets throughout the year, they do tests at the end of every term. I wouldn’t put too much thought into it.

Some are having tutoring, some not, but like someone else said if they are able they will be able to move sets if things change.

As a teacher and tutor, I do think children need a proper break over the summer. However, I also find that children who do absolutely no reading, writing or maths can be quite rusty when they return.

It does not need to mean intensive tutoring or hours of worksheets. Little and often is usually enough. Even one hour of tutoring a week works out at less than 10 minutes a day across the week.

Parents can also keep skills ticking over without paying for tuition. Reading regularly, writing a holiday diary or film review, baking and measuring ingredients, playing number games, or practising times tables can all help.

I would focus less on trying to secure a particular set and more on helping your child begin Year 7 feeling confident and ready to learn.

I hope this helps! I am more than happy to answer any other questions:)
