SW London how much does a tutor cost?

Hi all, looking for some guidance please! I’m based in SW London and have 2 daughters (Y3 and Y5) and I’m currently looking for tutors for both of them, but for different reasons. Y3 daughter needs a bit of a confidence boost in both maths and English. Y5 daughter needs some help with 11+ preparation.
The range of quotes I’m receiving is incredibly broad (from £25ph to £110ph!), so I suppose I am interested to know how much you are all paying your tutors?! I would be looking for a qualified primary school teacher. Thanks

about £45-65 from group sessions

£75-100 from 1:1 support

anything below £45 isn’t worth considering. I had TA’s and students below 45 and the ones I’ve had have not been knowledgeable

Wow I tutor (my secondary subject, not advertising and no help to op); I’m a qualified and experienced teacher (not teaching in school any more but well up on exam specs) and £45 is my top rate, and that’s for A level. I’m not in London tho so that probably makes a difference.

Not sure if that’s helpful @Moonlight2024 ? Are you looking for face to face, as that’s more £££ IME and obvs for London they need to live there.

We pay £47.50 an hour, and £55 for A Level for online lessons - the quality of the lessons is brilliant though and made a huge difference.

I'm in Kent and charge as follows for 11 plus tuition.

1:1 50 mins £48
Small group £24 per hour/£28 per 75 mins.

I'm online, so my students come from all over.

London tutors do tend to charge more.

I am South East London (Dulwich) and I charge £50 for primary tuition. What makes it expensive are agencies that charge you double what the tutor gets. Look for a qualified teacher who tutors independently of agencies for your year 3 child, who can develop their confidence and plug gaps in their learning through a variety of ways. For 11+, you might go for a non teacher who has lots of 11+ experience if there are no specific areas of weakness.

Moonlight2024 · 21/03/2026 10:58

@mugglewump thank you, that’s good to know.

Depending on exactly where you are based, I know of an amazing 11+ English tutor, who is very reasonable. She massively helped my son prep for his 11+ assessments. I’ll DM you her details, if helpful

I'm in SE London and a qualified dyslexia specialist teacher - £60 an hour for 1:1. If you are looking for a tutor always check qualifications.

Agree with all of the advice above. Always happy to recommend our amazing tutor, she’s been great for my kids. Feel free to send me a DM if you are still looking (we are also SW London).
