Too Soon For An English Tutor?

Hi everyone, looking for some advice on the timing of potentially getting an English Tutor for my 12 year old DS, who's just finished Year 7.

He has ASD, low muscle tone and hypermobility. Because of this he always struggled with writing / drawing as he experienced pain in his hands. Unfortunately his primary school spent so long trying to get him to write at all costs, that the quality and quantity of his writing is now really poor. Eventually, near the end of Year 5, we had a meeting with the school SENCO and some sort of area Head SENCO (super SENCO??) who effectively told the school to stop being daft, give him a laptop and focus on the content of his written work. Things did start to improve, and his Secondary school gave him a laptop for all lessons on day 2.

We've just had his Year 7 Report - he has excellent effort in all areas but every subject that requires any sort of detail to writing (English, history, Geography etc) has the same comment - needs to elaborate / add detail.

Should we be looking at a tutor for him at this point? Money is incredibly tight for us but if he needs it we'll find it somehow. He's not great with pressure though, and I don't want to put him off or make him panic if things might gradually improve?

Also, where do I even start finding a reputable Tutor? Should I look for certain qualifications / memberships? Google is OVERWHELMING...

I think that learning how to write in subjects like history is a target that many year 7s are working on. My kids had some sort of acronym to help them remember to write full paragraphs. In primary it was PEE (Point Evidence Explain) and in secondary it was something with more letters but I can’t remember what. It means the writing because formulaic but in tests you can hopefully get more of the marks because the marker sees what they are looking for.

Thank you so much @Snorlaxo . We have just been told about PEE here. My concern is that he's got Not Yet Met against the curriculum for these but from what you say it does sound like he will catch up. So tricky to know what's for the best!

Definitely. My DD really struggled with this. Get a tutor and it will help with all subjects.
