11+ small groups or individual tuition?

Hi everyone,

I've always taught 1:1 lessons in the past - but am thinking of offering small group lessons from September. What sort of price do you think is fair? What would you pay? For context, I'm a UK qualified Secondary English teacher and have been teaching the 11+ for many years. The groups would be 3 or 4 children and I'd provide all books and resources etc.

It would be lovely to get some feedback to help me get my pricing right. 😊

I'm starting my first term time group in September. I'm charging 60% of my 1:1 rate per child for a small group of 3 for an hour's lesson. So, £30 per child.

I run group courses in the holidays also and charge approx £22 per hour per child. But the groups are larger, up to 8 children. And each session is 3 hours with the course lasting 3 mornings.

That's really helpful, thank you. It's useful to look at it in percentage terms. I'm hovering around the £25/student in a group of 4 and £30/student in a group of 3.
What's your take-up like on the summer sessions? I run my own 11+ mocks, but keep them pretty small and local. I haven't branched out into group holiday courses yet.

This year I ran 2 fully booked Easter courses (3 mornings each) and I have 3 summer courses fully booked too. I also ran fully booked mocks in February and at May half term.

It helps that I tutor around 25 11 plus students a week as lots of them sign up but I also get bookings from non regular students.

I need to pull my finger out and do some promotion. I'll finish my exam marking next week and then can focus on advertising a bit. I usually get a full diary of students, but they come in dribs and drabs and seen to require 1:1. Fingers crossed I'll get some decent numbers for my groups. I agree with you that that makes the mocks more lucrative and the holiday courses too.

I’d happily pay £40/hour for such a small group. I think we paid about £27 for 70 minutes but the group was larger, maybe 6 children. Regarding the mocks, I would say the more children doing them at any one time the better, as I wanted mine to get used to dealing with distractions in the room.

That's useful information, thank you. I would be more than happy with £25/30 each for a small group - and that's great news you think that's affordable and good value.
I appreciate your comments about seeking out busy mocks as well. Perhaps I'm coming at that from the wrong angle, trying to keep them small and low key.
