Looking for a German teacher for gcse

TheDrsDocMartens · 20/01/2025 18:07

My daughter is year 9 and will be sitting GCSEs in school but taught 1:1. We are looking for a German teacher for her online and it’s proving very difficult.
Can anyone help or signpost us?

@TheDrsDocMartens

Does the Goethe Institut have something suitable?

Also try mypocketskill. I've found 3 great tutors (all undergrads) to help my DS with his A level subjects

DoveLisand · 21/01/2025 21:29

I used the My tutor website. Really good and easy to set up

@TheDrsDocMartens

Which board is she sitting, OP?

It's worth checking out the syllabus.

She might find the BBC Bitesize page interesting.

It's a pity that Mary Glasgow stopped distributing their German publications - they always looked so interesting - I wonder whether they are downloadable.

@clary

Clary, can you offer any advice to OP? I remember posts from you re MFL.

You will be more up-to-date on MFLs at GCSE level than I am.

Beautifulweeds · 21/01/2025 21:55

Guten Abend! I'm a German specialist and have been teaching MFL for over 20 years. I'm still working as a secondary school teacher part time, also tutoring, but hoping to set up my own tutoring business.

If you're interested please message me. Xx

I've PMd you @TheDrsDocMartens – is it support with learning covered in school you are looking for, or someone to teach the whole GCSE course 1-1?

clary · 22/01/2025 13:43

I meant to say @TheDrsDocMartens whatever you decide, the most important thing is that the tutor has a good grasp of the GCSE spec and what is needed.

A native speaker is lovely of course but a native speaker who doesn't know much about the AQA (or whichever) GCSE spec is a lot less useful than a non-native who does. I speak from experience here of assessing students who have had the native/non-GCSE-knowing tutor.

The GCSE as of course you may know is a box-ticking exercise to a certain extent; even a native speaker who is sitting it needs to know what things they should say and write. HTH

Edited to remove typos - you wouldn't think I was a native English speaker sometimes lol

We put a free ad on the local uni jobs board for a student to tutor for us. That worked out well.

TheDrsDocMartens · 22/02/2025 17:55

sorry took longer than I planned to come back 😳

Whole course 1:1. Exams will be taken in or via school but taught separately.

She’s good at languages but can’t cope in school.

Did you find someone then @TheDrsDocMartens or are you still looking? Which board? GCSE or IGCSE? Face to face or via Zoom?

MsFogi · 16/04/2025 19:53

Did you find one OP? If not, DM me - I have a really good GCSE German tutor who teaches online.
