There are lots of private tutors in our area. My Son in year 4 was one place away from being in the top set for maths, his best friend got the last place by doing a test. I asked my son if he wanted me to ask if he too could do a test to get in, but he thought he would struggle in the top set. He did really well in GCSC and in secondary school again he was in the second set, he had a fabulous teacher and his set did better in exams than the top set. Talk to teacher and see if they recommend getting one and if they feel he would benefit from one.

My daughter had one, primarily for the 11+, but also just general help and support. It was honestly the best money we spent..that and swimming lessons!
We found it just really boosted her confidence more than anything. We also didn't want her to fall behind, and wanted to make sure she made a positive impression when she went to her grammar school.

Yes yes yes.

I've kept a maths tutor all though secondary school. Best thing ever.

Also science and English.

Maths teaching in many comps is poor. Hard to get good maths teachers.

Our children benefitted but choose tutor careful.

Yes! We had (and still have for my daughter’s confidence) a wonderful tutor who helped her prepare for the 11+. She started with her in Year 5 and it made the world of difference by the time the exams came round. Best money we’ve spent.

It really depends on what you’re aiming to achieve. Are you looking to get your child into a competitive secondary school? Or, is your child falling behind at school and you’re worried? If it’s one of them, and you believe your child needs further support, using an experienced tutor with real-life experience supporting pupils taking entrance exams or catch-up work can make a big difference. However, if your child is good academically, then it’s often not worth the extra stress and pressure. Let me know if you need help with tutor recommendations.
