Hello everyone,
I am planning to do my Masters however I think I wont be able to write the essays. I am generally crap at writing and not an avid reader either. Any advises, guidance on how I can enhance my writing skills? I am a mature student close to 40 years.

Could you say why you’re planning on studying for an MA if you don’t want a good deal of reading? Essay writing you can practise with instruction, of course.

Just completed part time MA. In my 50s . The uni had some sessions on essay writing etc, which were aimed at post grad. so please ask what support there is. They will for sure run sessions and even one to one advice. Your first essay may be a practice one for sure. Depending on subject there may be subject specific guides to essay writing. But start by asking uni what support there is or look up on the student web pages or library.

Looking at my previous comment, it probably seems less sympathetic than intended. (This is also the sort of OP that often presages a heap of spam from online essay writing services - though I guess everyone just uses Chat GPT now.)

Your OP reads as if ‘not being an avid reader’ is a state you don’t intend to change - but that may not be what you actually meant? You’ll obviously find the course much more enjoyable if you embrace this element. I’m another who completed a postgraduate degree in my fifties, full time in my case. By the mid-point of the year I was hoovering up books - mostly under the duvet late at night or early in the morning on kindle. It didn’t feel like work because I was so fascinated by the subject - so my advice would definitely be to pick a subject you really want to immerse yourself in.
