UK - A Level Tutoring Question

Bhati · 19/09/2023 22:36

have never had any tuitions but I think for A level I would need it as the syllabus is quite heavy. Can anyone give me an idea if tutors teach topics only as we ask or they teach in the order school is teaching you? Just gathering some ideas from others before I reach out to any tutors. Maths, Biology and Chemistry are my A level subjects.

Depends on the tutor. I imagine they can be guided by you and your requirements, they would not be following any particular school order unless they had links to that school and knew their syllabus/approach.

Pinkpinkplonk · 19/09/2023 22:57

Any good tutor will be able to follow and support you through the syllabus if you give them the exam board information. They should also be able to access past papers for you

Astronutter · 20/09/2023 09:22

One advantage of tutoring is we can be flexible to what is most beneficial to the individual, rather than the group. How you want to approach your tutoring sessions should be addressed either when you organise sessions or in your first session. So, for example for some students you primarily revisit areas from earlier in the course to address misconceptions, whereas for others you’ll address issues they’ve had in lessons that week and for some you’ll follow their schools teaching schedule to pre-teach topics before they see it in class.

Most tutors will probably ask for both what school you go to and what exam board/ specification you’re using before/ during the first session again so they can tailor their approach to your specific course.

Agree with @catsnore different schools may teach the syllabus in a different order, so most tutors would follow what you would like to cover and/or what you are doing in recent school lessons.

I tutor Biology and Chemistry to A level, f2f and online. I am guided by my student, but I also guide them to follow their specification, which is chosen by the school.

Good evening,
I hope you are well. I have just come across your post and believe I can help recommend an excellent tutor. The tutor teaches online and holds 2 degrees in Maths ( awarded a 1st class in his BSc) and a Masters.
I’m sure you must have many questions, let me know if you would like his details and I’d be happy to help!

I tutor maths and further maths. I have taught for ten years and usually just respond to the needs of the student.

I.e.

  • if student comes with specific questions info through those
  • I check what they are currently learning in school and check their understanding of that
-if all is fine then I structure revision or ask if the student wants to learn ahead of school. It depends on the student what approach works best.

I have tutored Chemistry and Biology Alevel full-time for the last 12 years. I am also a current and experienced Alevel question setter and examiner.

I am guided by the approach which fits best for a particular student because every student has different requirements.

It can be difficult to teach to the exact order the school will be teaching topics in, though some schools are very good at providing this information on request (even schools covering the same exam board, may teach topics on a different order depending on the preference of the subject teachers). This approach can be most suitable for students looking for long-term tuition.

Other students may simply be looking for a boost right before the exams. They will require a different approach because most of not all of their school lessons may have finished. The exact approach for these students depends on discussion with the student and observation as to which approaches are likely to work best for them.

In other words, there's no set formula for sessions. It depends on the student, their strengths and weaknesses and their individual approach to learning. The advantage of one-to-one is that tailoring lessons to individual needs is not only entirely possible, but something I consider as a critical part of my work in order to get the best out of each student.

Our childrens' tutor teaches around their needs. She was fast to read them.
