Online EFL work

I've been working on an online platform as an EFL teacher for a couple of years alongside another job, with a CELTA qualification and some previous teaching experience in further education (recently) and as a teacher in a German high school (long ago).

For various reasons (living circumstances involving relocation, pay, hours, not wanting to have all my eggs in one basket) I am currently trying to find similar work (to do at the same time) for a second online provider. I have European nationality alongside British which can sometimes help.

I probably should look for better pay than I'm currently on (it's low, truth be told) but probably the number one requirement at the current time is just a guarantee of work because I've tried a couple of other places over the last two years that appeared to have good student demand at interview but that demand didn't really materialise in practice (or it materialised at very anti-social hours e.g. 4 AM!). Another problem I encountered with another place that temporarily hired me was incredibly strict codes, which I realise some others wouldn't have a problem with (e.g. "If you message a student, your signature must always be in font size X, font X, and you must always begin with the following sentence..."). Just my personality!

I can and do teach all ages, though because of my current focus on kids, adults would be a nice change. I'm not really interested in Business English. I have taught exam prep, grammar, free conversation, helped with homework, and all the core skills to all levels of learner from absolute beginner to near-native speaker.

Reading what I've written above, I hope this doesn't look like a bit of a cheeky request, that someone just find me a job please! The reality is, I'm rather on my last legs having been through little less than hell during the pandemic period and my job security at the moment is minimal whilst I am working long, long hours to make ends meet--so whenever I even think about this topic my anxiety levels go up crazily. I've also found it really difficult to sort the decent tutoring providers from the not-so-decent using web searches etc. as it's such a quickly changing marketplace. Therefore, I am putting this request out there!

Any recommendations of websites that advertise such jobs also really welcome. I know TEFL.COM

Thanks :-)

Hello again,

Just bumping this in case there are any EFL teachers out there who could give me a word of advice...

I'd really appreciate it!

Hello Tatoumorse. I've been teaching English online for eight years now following a career as a schoolteacher. I work for two online companies: Learnship and Fluentify. Pay varies at Learnship depending on who you're teaching. For me it's been between 19 and 23 euros an hour. However, I currently have only a few classes with them because they now prefer to pay 15 euros or even 12 and so offer work to newer tutors prepared to accept this new, lower rate.
Fluentify, on the other hand, pay 15 euros for the first 250 hours and then increase the rate to 19 euros. They are a great company to work for - very friendly and with lots of work available it seems.
I subscribe to Linguahouse for lesson material which really helps with my Fluentify work. Learnship supply the material for you (it's Business English so the audios and articles have a business slant).
I hope this is helpful to you. Good luck!

Hi @nowheregirl Thank you very much for the reply. It sounds as though Learnship aren't paying well to new tutors nowadays but Fluentify might be worth a shot!
I'm a bit surprised I didn't get more replies on this thread but I'm grateful for yours! Take care

I think Fluentify pay 20 euros for teaching corporate clients which is something I'd like to do. I really enjoy the work but it won't make us rich, will it?!
