Just received the year 2 school report for my DD, the results is really disappointed, almost all area is below age related expectations 🤦🏻‍♀️

Any tutor is recommend? Seems many tutor class is for 11+ or secondary, it seems find one for primary.

Really don't know how to help my DD. 😢

We have had a tutor for my DD1, who is just finishing yr2, for the last 12 months after it became very clear she was having difficulty in maths plus some gaping holes in her knowledge during the first lockdown. We chose someone who had been regularly recommended on local Facebook pages. It has been worth every penny. DD1 is much more confident, now enjoys maths, and has gone from developing to secure. She has also helped us to unpick wider difficulties in DD's learning. We will be keeping the tutoring going.
In the past her school have flagged issues with both reading and writing (and different times), but we managed this ourselves.

If everything is an area for concern, I would focus the tutor on the part you are most worried about and feel least able to help with yourself.
Personally, I find nightly reading practice is manageable, and writing is largely a case of practice, practice, practice so I get DCs to keep a short daily diary during the hols which we proofread together. When it came to the maths, although I am capable myself, I found trying to teach it very difficult not least because terms and techniques have changed. It was a very frustrating experience for us both, so a tutor was the answer.

Hi,
Where do you live? I know excellent tutor If you live in North West London. She has helped many children in my friends circle.

Sorry to hear your DD is struggling at school. This year there are a huge number of children with working towards outcomes, due to the disrupted learning. Tutoring to boost her skills and confidence is a good idea, but also reassuring her that she will 'bounce back' is also important. As for finding a tutor, there are websites such as Tutor Hunt and Bark and also local agencies. If you post on a mums' chat room in your area, you are likely to receive lots of offers of support. And if you are in SE22/SE21/SE15/SE5, I would love to help you myself: ten years' teaching experience and currently tutoring children just like yours.

A paid for tutor may help. You can find one online, look at well known tutoring sites that are commonly used or ask around at school for names. Get a list of names, and ensure their DBS check is up to date as well. Obtain references to check (at least two, that is the min number) and set goals too. Do ten minutes of reading each day in addition. In terms of maths, cooking is recommended. Or you could take her to a local cafe and ask her to estimate the cost of ordering a meal. Other ways include calculating the cost of a vacation or the price of a hotel room etc. More activities to try are those specially themed skill oriented ones designed to work on skills.

I am a primary HT and I'm all for tutoring in the right circumstances. Main things: use a tutor who is a qualified primary teacher, ideally with recent experience, check their DBS and references, make sure the sessions are enjoyable, low pressure and confidence building. Let the school know you are having a tutor and see if the class teacher and the tutor could have a quick phone call so the areas to be covered are really nailed down.
