How to find a tutor?

Hello,

I have a primary school aged child and am looking for a tutor.

How do I go about finding one? - safely, and be sure they have actual qualifications etc.
Do they have to have police checks etc?

Would be grateful for any websites you have used.

Thanks so much

Hi Molly. I used Tutor Bank for my son and was very happy with the results. The tutors were all vetted before hand and they came recommended to me as well. Not sure what ages they tutor with but you could email and find out. This is the website: www.thetutorbank.co.uk

I would ask your teachers at school.

Turns out 2 of ours do tutoring and they can easily liaise with their classroom teacher on what they're studying and having trouble on once we have our permission.

I used to advertise on First Tutors so that is another option. You can ask to see the DRB and ant certificates at the first appointment. I always showed mine.

I used tutor hunt to find a tutor. First tutors is another good place to look as well.

I found ours on a local mums Facebook group, she is a qualified primary teacher who tutors on her part time days. Ask fb groups / teachers.

Personally I wouldn’t hire a total random from a tutoring site, I looked into this for a bit but most people didn’t reply and the one who did was terrible, I had to interrupt the first session to end it because of her behaviour.

I am a tutor and the majority of my pupils come from personal recommendations although on a few occasions I have advertised on local Facebook page as I know longer teach at the nearby school.

Hi @Mollylikestodanceollylikestodance Try www.englishtutorial.co.uk or emailing [email protected] They offer online tuition over zoom from KS2/KS3/KS4. All qualified subject teachers who have taught at the top private schools so know the curriculum and skills kids need to focus on really well! My daughter has had tutoring with them for a few years now and the results have been excellent - she has progressed so much. Highly recommend Smile I hope this helps!

I would like to ask you to recommend a good science tutor for grade 9 and GSC in Harrow area. Appreciate your advice

Ask the school
Often they will know teachers that also offer tuition

Hi, I am a father and house husband/happy house elf😀. I am also a science educator with a background in technology businesses business. I am looking forward to learning from other parents about the challenges of supporting our children's development in these challenging times.

If I am looking for a person to educate my children I insist they have an enhanced DBS that was given in the last 24 months or is on the Update Service. I think this is a reasonable request to expect from a tutor.

Whattothink65 · 24/01/2022 11:27

There's loads of places to find good tutors. There are tutor directories but honestly I wouldn't trust these.
Facebook is great to find local places. You could ask for recommendations on here.

My DN uses someone but it's for 11+ and I only know that they are based in this area so that's important to look out for.

She uses a man at a company called Maths Concierge because they're based in Southend. I think they run classes which are more affordable too.

Otherwise try Tutorhunt? Make sure they're DBS checked and an actual teacher!

I think one problem with finding a tutor, making sure they have good subject knowledge is pretty straightforward. However that is not enough to be a good teacher. Finding out whether they are good at teaching and have a good understanding of pedagogy is far more difficult. Obviously if they are a Qualified Teacher Status, then you can be confident they have been trained in pedagogy. However, most tutors are not QTS. So what can you look for to be sure they are good at teaching?
