What do tutors cost?

Hi all, I'm considering getting a maths and sciences tutor for my son who will be sitting his GCSEs later this year, and I don't know what I should be expecting in the way of rates, such as what is considered fair, and what might be overpriced.

There seems to be a fair amount of variation in the adverts I've seen so far. I'd be so grateful if someone could give some advice!

I'm located in the Wiltshire/Somerset border area, although I don't know how relevant that is, as it would have to be online classes at the moment.

We are in the midlands and used to pay £35 an hour

waitroseandmore · 11/01/2021 22:03

We are in the midlands and pay £15 an hour for ks3 science and she's brilliant, although I've also heard of £30-40 as well.

happytoday73 · 11/01/2021 22:04

£30 and up seems to be the date near me

Movinghouse2015 · 12/01/2021 04:56

Anything from £20 - £60. It depends if you use a tutor agency or you know someone independent you can pay direct.

I'd consider some online resources like www.mygcsescience.com. I'd also check what resources school are providing.

I am a primary tutor and charge £38 per hour. Less for paired or group tuition. 20 years experience and a qualified teacher. Based in the southeast and online.

My primary tutor friends charge between £35 and £50 per hour for 1:1.

My daughter's Maths tutor charges £45 (30 years exp and qual teacher) and her physics tutor charges £24 (a uni student). They are both excellent but obviously someone who is a qualified teacher with many years experience of teaching exam classes are going to charge more.

All of these rates are based on levels of experience and reputation. You get what you pay for in most cases and tutors who are popular and in demand may well charge more.

The best thing is to ask other local parents for who they have used.

£50 per hour around here for GCSE maths and most of them are booked up.

TracyHorrobin · 15/02/2021 14:23

We are paying £43 per hour for 1 hour online each week for our Grandaughter. She has a tutor for physics (GCSE)

Midlifephoenix · 20/03/2021 14:32

Wow. I pay £25/hour for English tutor (professional who gets good results) and £15/for math and chemistry because he's a third year uni student studying, you guessed it, math and chemistry!

sprongle1 · 03/04/2021 09:26

I'd say anywhere between £35 and £75ph for a qualified teacher/very experienced tutor. Less for a student or less experienced teacher. More expensive doesn't necessarily mean better but those who are less expensive are generally priced lower as they have more spaces available to fill.

You want someone who your child understands and has a good knowledge of the course they are taking and it's exam requirements.

I'd be really interested in knowing people's locations and how much they are charging. I have been charging £30 per hour since I started tutoring 5 years ago, as per my union website at the time. But I think I need to raise my rates and highly experienced and in demand.

stclair · 01/05/2021 15:43

£60/h London

stclair · 01/05/2021 15:45

That was for maths for one DD, and £80/h for other one (8) for reading (possibly dyslexic). Ouch.

Lucyccfc68 · 12/05/2021 22:29

We are in the NW and pay £25 an hour. It’s 1-2-1 and done virtually but using IDroo, so my DS and tutor can see each other’s work.

His tutor is a retired maths/science KS4 teacher and ex deputy head. He is excellent and I think we were lucky to find him. I have seen maths graduates charging £35 per hour and they have no teaching experience.

chocolateforeverymeal · 13/05/2021 19:15

Yes, £25 very good for qualified, experienced teacher.

I have decided to amend my rates a little. Will stay the same for online or in my home, but am adding more if I need to travel, and minimum of two hours if more than 15 minute journey. Ideally, this will encourage people to come to me, but at least some compensation for the travel. I had been doing 15 mins to and from a couple of jobs.

helsterway · 17/05/2021 20:48

I charge £30 per hour - Teach Tutoring Online.
I have 20 years of experience teaching secondary school English.

languagelover96 · 16/06/2021 13:36

I'm in Surrey and currently take French lessons. My tutor costs £25.00 a week. This is a interesting thread. It is definitely fun to see what other tutors across the country charge for lessons.
If you use a well known tutor directory website like tutor hunt or first tutors, you can basically analyse rates and then also have a idea of what to expect in terms of lessons. Check out a few different tutors online. Ask other moms and dads what they pay etc. Look at reviews left by other parents. A good quality tutor knows a lot about what they are teaching, has a safety check that is recent, and has at least two references that can be checked. Experience and skills are also important.
