Thinking of hiring a tutor for dd advice needed.

Dd will be going into yr 9 in September. She struggles academically and I think she will need a tutor to help her. She struggles across the range of subjects but I don’t want to end up overwhelming her with tutoring in every subject.
Would doing maths and English be enough? And when would be best to start with tutoring?
I will be proud of her no matter what grades she achieves but I’m also aware that a lot of college courses require a certain level to be accepted. She is a much more hands on learner and has no interest in staying on to do a levels after GCSEs.

Can’t edit, it’s to help her with GCSEs.

I tutor myself (not English or maths) and it definitely has a lot of benefits as your child is getting one to one support but I often find kids have the ability but just need someone to help with confidence more than anything. I would say in the first instance speak to the school and see what your daughter's teachers think. Supported study might be available in the school which is usually free and might be enough to help. If you do want to go forward with tutors you could stagger English one week maths the next so it doesn't get too much? When I work with a student I usually work to improve their confidence and ability and help with study skills etc so they're prepared for exams. Teachers can often recommend good tutors that will charge less than tutoring companies. Sites like tutorful who I'm registered with aren't 3rd party so you'll contact the tutor directly but they do a thorough background check and to be registered we have to submit qualifications and criminal record checks etc so you can be sure you're using someone above board.

If DD is struggling, then I would consider hiring a tutor for English and Maths (if she requires help with those). Especially as a lot of jobs/further education courses ask for a minimum of grade c or equivalent at GSCE level maths and English.

One to one tutoring may also boost her confidence, as well as her skills at tackling questions. Agree with poster above, ask teachers at school.

I can send you the details of a tutor that we used for DS (she's also tutored our friend's children as well), she was very good. I think she still tutors maths, but she doesn't tutor English.

If you are looking for a more affordable/flexible option, Seneca have an interesting new Q&A service. You can ask unlimited questions in all subjects for £30 per month. This is the link - www.senecalearningtutoring.com/access

I tutor as well as teach. I am an English tutor and offer help with subjects such as History, Drama, Geography - mainly in how to answer the questions

KaptainKaveman · 02/07/2020 07:52

How is it possible that you are a qualified teacher in all those subjects, Pieceofpurplesky ? do you teach all those GCSEs?

@KaptainKaveman My degree is English/Geography and I have taught both. I have also taught GCSE History in my 20 year teaching career.
When tutoring, as I said, it's about HOW to answer the questions and write them

KaptainKaveman · 11/07/2020 12:32

Indeed it is. So you are 100% au fait with the 1 - 9 syllabuses for all of those subjects then? All boards?

Pieceofpurplesky · 11/07/2020 14:42

The initial point @KaptainKaveman was that a tutor in one subject may be able to boost others. Obviously 99.9-% au fair on English and Geography (I wouldn't ever claim to be 100% but I am an exam marker in English and have been for many years). History I know the syllabus and the changes made from A/G to 1/9. As I said I help with how to tackle a question. Drama I have helped with the coursework
Element (BTEC).
And do you know what - I actually help them achieve grades.
I have also trained our PE department in school and worked with their pupils on how to construct answers to questions.

If you want to have a go - just do it rather than unsubtle digs.
