Mums of Mumsnet - what do you do when you can't answer questions?

It's easy to answer maths questions for young ones. But how about when they get a little older and start doing problems you can't help them with? Is it just time to throw the towel in and give up?

I think some parents try to upskill and just (re-)learn the material, but most turn to tutoring.

How do you guys manage?

Tell them to ask Google. And if needed teach myself from google and then teach them.
Tell them to ask Grandpa (admittedly only any use because Grandpa is good at maths and science)

DS1 taught DS2 and me how to do binary and denary code recently.

haha funny anecdote!

But how to you know they are teaching you the correct stuff?

Thats a good question. I guess trying to be selective about which websites you use from google. So if wikipedia comes up I tend to ignore it (dc are allowed by their schools to use it but ive got them into the habit of not as colleges don't usually allow it).
Other than that I just hope it's right. I suppose we are lucky that we have relatives who are good at different things to me so we've managed so far. Unless you're studying quantum physics or something most of what you find online would be fine I would imagine.
What age group are you trying to help? (Or is it a hypothetical question?)
BBC bitesize is good.

Thanks for sharing! Yeah mostly GCSE level is what I'm talking about. Was just wondering how parents can help out with this sort of stuff. BBC Bitesize is indeed good!

Google or use a private tutor.

I would look at BBC Bitesize and also YouTube videos. I would also look at Oak National Academy if I was still struggling. Luckily maths I don't find too bad but I do struggle with English which unfortunately is not as clear cut.
