DIY tutoring in English: all advice welcome

I have a son in Y4, and have been trying to find him an 11+ tutor for Y5. I've had no luck. I've contacted one or two recommended agencies, but beyond the initial "Thank you for registering," I've heard nothing back. I didn't realise it would be this hard to find someone.

The thing is, I have the time to teach him myself. I love teaching him myself, and he loves learning with me. I find Maths easy to teach, but not English. I have no idea what an exemplary piece of Y4 writing looks like; it's hard to aim for a standard when you don't know what it is.

How do I go about this? Am I naive to think I can buy a few books on 11+ English and work through them, or do I really need someone with access to secret past papers and insider knowledge of specific schools?

What does a good English tutor do?

Very grateful for any advice.

Hello, I'm a qualified Secondary teacher. I think a Tutor would be a good idea. Is your son a fluent reader? How did he do in his SATs? I'd be happy to tutor your son for the 11 plus via Skype. I have got several students into several local Grammar schools.
