11+ mock exams

DC1 is in Y5 and will be sitting 11+ in Bucks in Sept. I'd like to arrang some exam practise before then so just wondered what others are doing/have done.

DC is bright and intellectually capable of passing. Just not sure what will happen in an exam situation. If I leave it 'til August will that be too late?

Or should I try from Easter to pick up on weak points?

Any advice/experiences appreciated.

DS will be sitting 11 plus in Essex next September. I am not going down the tutoring route, but we have got workbooks with papers in and I am getting some past papers for this area - there are not that many available and they are £15 each. He's doing the workbook ones at home as practice, we do one a week either maths or English (when his brother is at Beavers!). Nearer the time we will do some of the actual past papers under exam conditions (ie both English and maths) but at home.

As far as I know the exam itself will take place with about 500 other children in a hall, he will have to take himself in, register himself, etc. I can't replicate that at home or anywhere else so am not going to try!

Practising exam technique around timed past papers seems like an excellent idea.

You can do the exam prep etc at home as pp suggested. If you want him to experience exam conditions beforehand, try Susan Daughtrey Education, they run mock exams from around May onwards I think, and you don't have to have used them for tutoring to do the mock exams.

Speed is definitely going to be an issue, but I would like a way to replicate the atmosphere... so really need to find an organisation that does that (or find 500 volunteers!). Will try Susan Daughtrey.
Thanking you!

I entered my DS for the 10+ the year before the 11+ as a mock exam. Am glad I did as it gave him a proper taste of what the real exam would be like (and he was offered a place which we weren't expecting at all although we didn't accept!)

LahdidahLady · 18/01/2018 21:30

Oh Dimsum what a clever idea. But I think I'm probably too late as sign up for Sep18 11+ exams is in a few mths. Will keep that idea in mind for DC1!
