Hello

I hope everyone is well and has had a good winter Smile
Apologies if this topic has been discussed before, but I am hoping you guys can give the best advice.

I'm considering starting to prepare my 8yr old son (Yr 4) for the 11+.
He is quite bright in all his subjects (handwriting seems to be his main weakness) but I think some extra help would....err...help :-)

Unfortunately, I am not able to afford tutoring at the moment, but I can tutor him myself at home. I came across some sites that provide worksheets to print at home, like Twinkl & PrimaryResources.

I was wondering if anyone has had experience of any of these sites and for the money, which site you would recommend to subscribe to for the worksheets?

Thanks in advance for your help & advice.

Twinkl is worth every penny. I wouldn't bother with primary resources.
Teachitprimary is brilliant. You need to sign up but get so much good stuff on the free subscription. Likewise for education.com, which is American but the free sign-up gets you a certain amount of downloads per month.
I use Maths Salamander as well. It's American but free and so useful.
There are a few great free resources for maths on www.mathsphere.co.uk/resources/MathSphereSampleWorksheets.htm#Year4 and also a few good free games.
I've used k12reader.com a few times for some fantastic reading comprehension bits.
I hope this helps with the handwriting www.teachhandwriting.co.uk

Good luck

There are several good websites that provide decent worksheets. However, using them can create quite a disjointed way of going about things - diving into different topics at various levels. It's easy to omit certain topics or to dive in too high/ low.

Those I do favour are:
Dad's Worsheets (maths - choose topics you know that your DC needs).
www.dadsworksheets.com

Classroom Secrets - for a range of topical maths and English resources. Lovely, differentiated worksheets.
classroomsecrets.co.uk

Primary Resources (select carefully)

TES Resources (select carefully)

However, I'd only recommend using these website materials to pad out a more comprehensive set of text book resources - not as core materials. You'd end up with too many gaps.

Good textbooks are published by:
WH Smith's (some are surprisingly good)
Galore Park etc

Much will also depend on which exams your DC will be sitting for.

For handwriting, grab yourself a copy of Lois Addy's Speed Up. It consists of a fantastic programme of activities. She's an experienced Occupational Therapist (paediatric).

Does anyone know if school exams.co.uk is any good for SATs preparations? Can’t afford a tutor

neverstraightforward · 26/03/2018 21:19

Don’t bother.
Use this free site: www.sats-papers.co.uk
Don’t sweat it over SATs.
