Year 8 Tutor for English and Science in Ealing or West London

Hi All,

Our son goes to an outstanding primary in Y8, but is struggling with English. This is despite him doing really well in his English SATs in Year 6.

It would be great if someone can recommend a good English tutor in the Ealing area. Also, it will be good to have recommendations for a Science tutor.

Have you considered online tuition as an alternative to traditional face-to-face tutoring? It seems to be the growing trend in the private tutoring sector. There are many great tutor-directories, just search in google or your 'other favourite search engine' and see what comes up. Most offer a first trial lesson free of charge as well. It's important to get the right fit for a tutor and student as well. Make sure the tutor you contact asks questions about your child that instil a sense of confidence - particular areas struggling with, which areas are easier / harder and every good tutor will tailor their sessions to best accommodate the preferred learning styles of their students.

I myself am an online science tutor specialising in Key Stage Three and GCSE syllabuses but I do not wish to post any information on that through fear of 'self promoting'!

Many thanks Supernova, I will certainly look up online tutoring. Am guessing these are considerably less pricey, any idea on hourly rates please?

They can be less costly yes, although some do charge high amounts. Often a huge bonus is the simplicity - no need to ferry a child to a tutors or making sure the house is presentable for a tutor to come to!

As with most things of this nature, the whole spectrum is covered! Anywhere from £15 to £40 is quite common. I'm not a huge believer in online tutors charging large amounts (I don't wish to open a huge can of worms here with users arguing people deserve a fair wage etc).

I myself charge £15, but i'm new to the scene of online tutoring so my prices are introductory at the moment. As with a lot of things, you often get what you pay for, but not always! Just because someone is charging a high rate does not mean they are fantastic at what they do, and equally a low cost tutor can provide very good value for money - especially undergraduate students and A-level students.
