Mega Bloks? Duplo? Lego? Which shall we go for?

Ds is nearly 2. He LOVES building with blocks.

Dd is nearly 4. She plays too and enjoys it but not with quite as much enthusiasm as ds.

We have a small set of Mega Bloks.

Shall we just stick with the Mega Bloks and add to it at upcoming birthdays?

Or will we regret doing that and wish we had started on something different?

Shall we just go straight to normal sized lego? Is it better to have a collection of the big stuff too?

This is brand new territory for me. Any advice from those with older childrten will be much appreciated.

I can only speak from my own experience, but Lego is very small and my son (who is 3) doesn't yet have the dexterity to play with such small pieces and gets quite frustrated. The fact that we have to fish pieces out of his mouth also doesn't help.

If I was you, I would stick to the megabloks and buy some lego (it has age levels on the boxes) when he gets older.

I haven't bought Duplo - I think it is a bit of a waste and would rather save the cash and buy the proper lego when he is old enough.

I did buy the wooden blocks from the ELC and those have been a huge hit along with the megabloks.

Duplo

much better quality than mega blocks and lego is too small and fiddly at that age. Duplo is compatible with lego anyway (i.e. can be fixed together) so can still be used if they move on to lego when they're older

we've got loads of duplo and all 4dc (11 - 2) play with it weekly, 2 year old daily. They cna build very big things quickly as the blocks are so big

Duplo. Mega Blocks are a bit basic after two. We've ditched our bag of megablocks and DS got a huge amount of duplo for his Birthday in November and loves it.

Lego is too small - we'll be moving onto that when he's 4ish (an no doubt having the lego vs playmobile debate)

agree - Duplo. you can get lots of different sets with animals, people etc, so it has llots of play value as both a straight construction set and for imaginative play making farms etc.

My 2 are 8 and 10 and still play with the duplo sometimes, although I have kept it for friends children who come to play

Duplo it is then. Thank you ladies

btw MaMight - your thread in pedants is still going.. did you ever think what that that lost word was?

Duplo. My two dc's love it and it's probably the most played with toy. They are 2.2 and 4.5. Actually I am buying more for Easter, don't tell dh!

MaMight · 18/03/2010 18:20

Something like this then?

this is a good set. Baseplates IMO are essential, but they're bloody expensive.

And I DS would like this one but it's too expensive for what it is.

DS is almost 2.4 and loves it

I recently tried to get rid of my DCs' Duplo collection, only for DD to decide that it was the best toy ever and that she would play with it constantly. DD is 7.
