Does anyone now if you can mix Lego City bricks with Lego Creative bricks? Am new to Lego so will only know on Christmas Day!

DS1's GP's have bought him this and I've asked someone else to get him this can they be used together? Or should I stick to the City stuff? He will be 4 in March, so I think he might be a bit young for it anyway?

all lego from lego goes together
and duplo and lego work together too

he may technically be a bit young for it, will definitely need help to build the big bits. my ds (just 5) has had little lego since about the same age but prefers to make his own creations (little spaceships mainly) than follow instructions and build something specific.

ChasingSquirrels · 04/12/2009 10:46

lego is lego - all goes together.
be prepared to spend alot of time building it yourself with a 3yo!

(have ds1 - 7 who loved lego and ds2 - 4 in Jan who "helps" - hahaha)

kimlouiseb · 04/12/2009 10:46

Yes they can be mixed - I'm pretty sure all the lego themes are compatible with each other. My 3.5 year old has just started playing with his big brothers lego and loves it. He is playing with it as I speak. I put a blanket on the floor for him so we can tip all the bits out onto it (can't find anything in the box - we've got the large brick box)and makes it easier to tidy up afterwards.

thatsnotmymonster · 04/12/2009 10:51

The lego we have doesn't go with Duplo

DS has had small lego from the same age (Christmas last year) he will be 5 in March.
He doesn't build the kits- just has a huge selection of pieces and will spend ages building little self creations- all types of vehicles. 'Tis fab.

Though the StarWars spaceship he got is now just mixed in with all his other lego, probably will never be able to build it again but nevermind.

TillyMintSpy · 04/12/2009 10:56

TNMM - maybe the duplo / lego you have is not the real mccoy? Ours all matched up

DS has had numerous box sets and general blocks of lego and everything is completely mixed up. He makes really imaginative creations of his own rather than sticking to the instructions for making a boat or whatever!

ChickandDuck · 04/12/2009 10:57

Thanks all - the thing that made me wonder is the city stuff says age 5+ and the creative from 4+. Thought they may be different sizes or something.

All lego is interchangeable and why they call different series of sets by different names escpaes me...it is a marketing ploy I think.

Lego is Lego.

mazzystartled · 04/12/2009 11:01

i think the ages is just about the complexity of the models

mrsgboring · 04/12/2009 11:16

Lego is fabulous. My DS1 has been playing with it since about 2.8. At 4 he's beginning to be able to follow the instructions himself - in the beginning we helped him build the creation once and then he pulled it apart and rebuilt his own bizarre contraptions.

It will all fit together fine, but it will get mixed up together and will have to wait till he's a very bored older child before being sorted out again, if ever.

Still a joy. Can't sing Lego's praises highly enough.

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 04/12/2009 11:21

lego is great, DS1 has had kits of things and once he has built them they go into his under bed storage box and he creates all new things (mostly spaceships!)

ChickandDuck · 04/12/2009 11:41

He already has a small box of duplo that sat un-used for months under his bed. He's just become obsessed with it (like something clicked in his brain!). He's made the most amazing spaceships/dinosaurs/robots out of this little box!

The duplo blocks are alot bigger than Lego bricks though? How do they fit together? He has the Lego City calender and I can't see how they would fit together?

AnalysisParalysis · 04/12/2009 12:28

Fck me... I have been using Lego for 30 years, dd has had Duplo for 2 years... I had no* idea they fitted together... and they do! I just did it

Whole new worlds open up...

AnalysisParalysis · 04/12/2009 12:31

Chickandduck- dd is exactly same age- she has played with her duplo every single day for the last 2 years (except 2 weeks away on holiday)- but recently something just clicked as you say- and the models she makes now are amazing!
I am getting more duplo for christmas though (rather than lego) as her (very) little brother is extremely fascinated by the coloured blocks too...

ChickandDuck · 04/12/2009 12:35

Oh yeah!!

Well that answers my question then!

Maybe this discovery needs it's own thread?
Mazzystartled... you have done this household a GREAT. SERVICE. ... your name will be revered for generations to come....

AllBuggiedOut · 04/12/2009 12:45

OMG it works with Quatro too! My DSs will be very excited, thanks all!

notcitrus · 04/12/2009 12:56

I'm informed that Duplo works with MegaBloks too - has anyone tested this? (family babies all loving MegaBloks and getting to Duplo age!)

And any idea how I persuade MrNC that when familybabies are old enough not to eat it, not to unleash 20 crates of Lego onto the house at once? We come from hoarding families...

mazzystartled · 04/12/2009 16:52

my pleasure a.p.

we have some fake lego stylee megablocks and they barely work together let alone with anything else, but some of the bigger stuff does.

dh is a lego purist, i know what he means

ChickandDuck · 04/12/2009 17:50

popmum · 04/12/2009 18:02

chickandduck - i'd just start with a big tub like here he can make whatever he wants then, its more creative like that!

ChickandDuck · 04/12/2009 20:34

It's ok I've found one at our local Toys R Us, DP fetching tomorrow.

Popmum - this is a big collection of those ones I think, over 1000 bricks. Should keep him busy GP's have already got him the City Farm one
