Tonies or Yoto for a 2 year old?

amberonyx · 04/10/2025 20:04

What's best both from a price perspective long term, and ease of use / enjoyment for a toddler?

I have heard that Yoto will last them longer in terms of age, but is Tonies more age appropriate for a 2 year old?

my Toni box wasn’t used much. Then it stopped working. Looking at the yoto now.

APatternGrammar · 04/10/2025 20:07

I think a two year old will have slightly more enjoyable from a Toniebox, but a Yoto will be much longer lasting.

BobbieTables · 04/10/2025 20:08

My niece & nephew 4 & 7 still love the yoto & have had it a few years.

amberonyx · 04/10/2025 20:13

Thanks all! Regarding the Yoto, is there much difference between the standard and the mini?

thegirlwithapearl · 04/10/2025 20:14

Yoto is much better and lasts longer in terms of age of child, Yoto mini in particular is excellent. Tonies are clunky and a pain to travel with.

SquigglePigs · 04/10/2025 20:14

Not sure about difference but we've only ever had a mini and can't think of anything we're missing that the other one could offer.

Please don't buy any gadgets for your LO. Please spend time reading (boring to you) actual books. Take them to the local library and let them choose their own books (it's free!!) Read the books to them at home (again and again, so boring but so good for them). My DD1 always chose books about a baby sibling! Her favourite fairy story was Rumpelstiltzkin - read it to find out why.

Give your children 'dumb' toys without batteries so that they can stretch their imaginations. A pile of stuffed toys will become a family or a friendship group in your LO's clever hands. DD1 created all kinds of car crashes ... Show them how to twist a Rubik's cube. Even if no one solves it ..

Talk to your LO about your favourite topics - music, pop stars, films, clothing brands, food, sport, best picks for the afternoon races, vegetables you hate - anything; just please talk to them. Please don't abandon them to AI ...

SloppySocks · 04/10/2025 20:21

We found a CD player cheaper and easier. Still being used years later for music as well as audiobooks.

Thank you for your input. Though I'd say it's quite brazen of you to assume that those who've purchased an audiobook player don't read physical books to their children.

Also my child is 2, what on Earth makes you think I would introduce them to AI?

Our tonie is faulty and the customer service has been poor. I’m considering a yoto (hence living on the thread!)

What a load of patronising, self-righteous rubbish. Tonies and Yotos are both screen-free and encourage a love of language and story-telling. I could understand if we were talking about shoving kids on an iPad for hours but this is a toy that simply allows them to listen to a story of their choosing. Nothing to do with “AI”.

Not every single moment of parenting has to be hands-on interaction between parent and child. As a full-time working mother I can promise you that 10 mins of Tonies a day has done my kids no harm at all, they love it, and - gasp - it actually allows me to get on with tasks like unloading the dishwasher occasionally!

Magik01 · 04/10/2025 20:33

My two children both have yoto minis, my eldest since he was 3 (he’s 7 now) and he literally listens to it every night as he falls asleep to stories. He’s listening to it right now! If you needed a referral code let me know, you can get an extra 10% off with it. ☺️

tarheelbaby · 04/10/2025 20:37

Sorry, I thought you were debating the merits of the two devices before buying one. Perhaps the stories are not read by AI robots ...

Since you are considering an audiobook player, it gives the impression that you do not read (physical) books to your child. In your case, that is apparently not true.

I still think you shouldn't buy one.

Get a grip. An audio book with no screen has it's place.

Wtf.

A CD player is a lot cheaper and there are lots of very cheap CDs in charity shops and e-bay.

Why would the stories be read by AI?
I would bet that families with a Yoto read far more to their children than the average family. It’s not to save you having to read to them, it’s to give them autonomy. That’s why it’s popular with crunchy Montessori type families.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 04/10/2025 20:43

@amberonyx we have 2 mini players, one for each child and this works for us.
We mainly listen at bedtime after we've read some books and then they drift off listening to this.
The radio station is great as is the daily podcast.

We are currently listening to Robin Hood.
You can get a lot of books and then if you buy the yoto card of the same book they have read along versions.
I would highly recommend the yoto

If you do decide to go for it, I have a. Code that gives you 10% off a £60+ spend

You know why they are in charity shops now?
CDs are easy to scratch. Who even uses CDs nowadays?!

APatternGrammar · 04/10/2025 20:44

I like the regular-sized yoto as the icons are easier to follow on the phonics and maths cards.

I was thinking about this for the Flags cards! Good to know it does make a difference

People who don't want to spend a fortune on a yoto player 😀

They're not on charity shops because they scratch easily (they are a bit delicate!) but because they have been superseded by new technology.

janiejonstone · 04/10/2025 20:53

We had the Tonie from when my DD was about a year old until she was five. It was brilliant as even from a very young age she could grab the figures and knew what the stories were. We had it set up next to her cot and when she woke up in the morning she'd stick her arm through the bars and pop on the Gruffalo! I think the Yoto would have been too fiddly at that age. The Tonie figures are also beautifully made, so they were great birthday and Christmas presents.

We got a mini yoto for travelling when she was five, then the big one about a year later. I like having both because the little one is great for in the car and taking away. But you can also play them through your phone in a pinch.

Also for the people saying we should read to our kids instead, it's not instead, it's as well. Seems totally weird to suggest that listening to audiobooks gets in the way of reading. I listen to masses of podcasts and audiobooks, and it makes no difference to how much I read!

WannabeMathematician · 04/10/2025 20:54

Have the large yoto. Never tried the toonie Son uses it 3 years later. he liked putting the music on and having a dance or a sing with it.
