What would everyone recommend as a cute token gift for a newborn baby for a family not wanting clutter?

Thanks

I sent a sensory muslin from Etta Loves for a baby nephew, had to be small and light as sending to America and their not big on 'stuff'.
They love it, gets used all the time.

One of those black and white cloth baby books that folds out for the pram or tummy time. Bought one recently from John Lewis ( and some lovely pamper stuff for Mum)
I got a lovely video of baby with the book a few weeks later.

Some sort of clothing or really cute hat is good - don't buy the smallest size, but maybe the next size up, e.g. 3-6 months, and make sure it suits the weather it'll be when the baby is that age.

Imisscoffee2021 · 03/06/2025 15:38

A black and white cloth book with a mirror in it, and something edible for the tired new parents:)

Knitily · 03/06/2025 15:39

A baby sensory book or a packet of pretty muslins (you can never have too many)

The Lamaze baby toys are aesthetically horrific but babies seem to love them.

'Don't want clutter' message to me would suggest they'd prefer vouchers/money to buy what they need. I'd give vouchers and something edible for the parents, food is very very welcome for those first few weeks!

TinyFlamingo · 03/06/2025 18:45

Hand and feet finders are super cute

Calphurnia · 03/06/2025 18:47

Rock-a-thigh socks 💘

Emma543 · 03/06/2025 18:48

Best present I ever got was a just eat voucher 😂absolute life saver for not wanting to cook but saving money on mat pay.

JillMW · 03/06/2025 18:48

So many baby gifts are unused. A small amount of money for the child’s bank soon tots up and can be added to each birthday. Much better to be handed a bank account at age18 than to have received boxes full of miscellaneous items set to go to landfill.
Whatever you get don’t get the black and white cloth book, a friends baby received 33!

LondonFox · 03/06/2025 18:54

Money obviously

ThisAmberShark · 03/06/2025 19:02

Thanks for the ideas, everyone! When we had a newborn, received far too many seasonally inappropriate clothes that we never used. Glad we never ended up with 33 of those books! Will probably go with voucher idea, I think our most well received gift at the time was a food voucher, thinkinf about it.

I've recently had a baby. Best gift was a 12 photo frame, a photo for each month of their first year. Or John Lewis baby grows in a couple of sizes up.
I had so many "clothes" (I keep my babies in babygrows until at least 6-9 months)and comforters which all got returned to the relevant shops in exchange for vouchers

Julieju1 · 03/06/2025 19:34

If you are interested the UK, Premium bonds, may be more than you want to spend.

Books for baby, doesn't have to be for newborn.

Food -frozen or delivery vouchers for parents.

AmyDuPlantier · 03/06/2025 23:43

Honestly I think presents for the parents are better! For the mum…nice hand cream, magazines, little treats…everyone is so focused on the baby that a little ‘you’re doing amazing’ package is so appreciated.

If it is their first baby, I actually think books are a great opportunity because they won't already have all the best classic picture books. So you can just pick really good quality favourites from when your own children were little and get those.

RealPearlDuck · 05/06/2025 05:27

The voucher idea is amazing, OP, that's what I'd go with.
Do they like pictures? You can book a professional newborn photo shoot for them, my SIL had one as a gift from our MIL and she loved it. We're still getting smartdhow 3d slideshows with photos of her kid even a year later! But make sure to read the reviews, especially if you're booking a studio.

I always buy one or a giftset of these LE PETIT MAUS swaddles. Similar to brands mentioned here like etta but i love the cute themes and it looks like you made them personal to the mums (aka they are musical, or like skiing etc)! Perosnally have a few and good quality
