Lego Power Up - help!

DS is 10, and is at a stage where he's awkward to buy for - he's outgrown a lot of toys now, but we're not prepared to buy him tech, so it's hard to think of presents for him. He also doesn't particularly want anything, but obviously he can't just have nothing on Christmas morning (he wouldn't be interested in money, either - he'd put it in his bank account and leave it there).

He does like Lego, so I'd wondered about getting him some of the Powered Up stuff, like motors etc. I just can't figure out how it works though. On the Lego site you can buy motors, controllers, lights, battery packs, sensors etc, but I don't understand what he'd actually need in order to motorise a car, for instance. Do I need a battery pack, for instance, or do some of the components have their own battery compartments? What about the controllers? And what are the differences in the different motors?

Basically I think he'd enjoy having a little motor that he could add wheels to, and if it came with a remote control he'd love that too. He'd probably also enjoy adding lights and things, but we can always get him more bits next year if he takes to it.

Any advice?

I love Lego but haven't ventured into the power up stuff. Do you live near a Lego store? I find the staff there are really helpful and knowledgeable so might be worth a trip

What about Lego technic??? They are very good with motors and technical bits all included in the box

BelfastSmile · 22/09/2024 15:45

Thanks! We don't have a Lego shop nearby, I'm afraid. Technic is a good idea, but I can't see any on the Lego site which say they have motors. We do have one which is a "pull back" mechanism, which is great, but an actual motor would be great! Any recommendations appreciated!

@BelfastSmile I'll ask my eldest son he's the lego master in our house. Have you tried looking at the Lego website??? They have a good a good selection on there x

Thank you! I've tried the website, yes, but I'm finding it hard to see which ones have motors!
