Tonie or Yoto for a 2 year old?

I'd been set on buying 2 year old DD a Tonie box for Christmas and then I came across the yoto and the rave reviews and now I'm unsure which is the best for a 2 year old!

I personally prefer the aesthetic look of a Tonie box but I did find that there wasn't a huge choice of Tonie characters to buy, whereas there seem to be so many yoto cards of stories she likes.

I'm not too worried about longevity of it as we will pass it down once she's done; I'd rather she get use of the best one for her age now than think of in 2 years time.

It seemed that those raving about the yoto had slightly older children so I'm wondering whether anyone could please share experiences/recommendations for around 2 years old?

Thanks!

So funny you posted this as i also have a 2 year old and am having the same deliberaton.

I would go for the tomie if it had the nightlight and sleep trainer. Indon't think it does so dont know which one to go for!

Ps tomie on offer for Black Friday

We got a yoto for my son's second birthday. Fabulous bit of kit. Radio great, cards cheaper than tonies, good app with free content too. Tonie box is good too but I am very happy with our yoto

Cant comment on yoto but I recently purchased a tonie and my son loves it. I now have a code for £15 off if it'd be useful to you. It's rfz-v2l-0aa-zfx

I don't know the answer to your question, but What is the benefit of these compared to an old fashioned cd player? Obviously cds are too delicate for most 2 year olds to handle! Is that it?

My DS got one for his second birthday and he still loves it a year later. I like the longevity aspect but also that the cards are clearly for the Yoto whereas a friend I know who has a tonie gets frustrated that her same aged child uses the figures as just toys instead of with the actual tonie player.

I like that there is a nice variety of cards, songs, stories make your own and soundscapes etc and the radio and podcast are brilliant.

Yoto! It’s brilliant. We got ours at 16m and they’ve used it constantly. You can make your own cards (if you fancy singing or playing some nursery rhymes or reading a story), everything can be controlled via the app and saved on there so it doesn’t matter if you lose a card - just make a new one. The word cards have been a big hit. We also use as a nightlight and play lullabies which can set a cut off time on remotely. So pleased with it, thinking of getting the travel sized one for Christmas.

Hoping a YOTO player is the better option as I've just ordered one for 2yo ds Christmas!
I thought the same about a better range of stories for yoto, also I thought the little figurines for the tonie will go missing easily.

Hopefully it's as big of a hit in your house as it has been in ours. Top tip is we got a cheap desk tider to sit next to it to store all the cards which works brilliantly and allows our little one full autonomy.

Loads! There’s a little light screen that can be used as a nightlight, it comes up with little pictures, so for example with the counting or word cards a number or a picture of the word comes up encouraging them to make an association. They can put the cards in themselves and change what they are listening to (my 18m old is not advanced enough to change a cd player). You can control remotely, you won’t lose anything as you can just make a new card from the app. Think you can use it with podcasts etc (not at that stage yet), lots of story books (not even sure they make story books on tv anymore?), easily portable, won’t ‘jog’ like a cd player. I’m so impressed with it!!

Yoto. It's amazing!

WolvesOfTheCalla · 23/11/2022 13:49

Tonie by a long shot. They release new ones (what feels like!) weekly.

The Yoto cards are flimsy and easy to lose IMO.

Some Tonies are music, but most are stories.

They really aren't flimsy at all. They are sturdier than a debit card. Plus you can't actually lose them as they are stored in the app.

Excellent, thank you

I’m ordering DD (3yo) a yoto. The Yoto seems more versatile and the cards easier to store than multiple (bulkier, and more expensive) Tonie model things which will 100% get trailed around the house. I also didn’t like the fact that slapping the side changed chapters etc, feels like that would get annoying to use and get pressed accidentally. DH originally leaned towards the Tonie but after we watched a few reviews on YouTube he changed his mind.
