Is an expensive balance bike worth it?

I am wanting to get a balance bike for my son's 3rd birthday and was looking at the Tadpole/Tadpole+ range. Can get for around £100 second hand. However with the cost of living going up so much I'm now wondering if its worth it. Will it be so much better th a £50 bike? Does it matter at this stage?

This thread is a little old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for a balance bike for your child, we’ve recently updated our best balance bikes page with lots of great options, as tried and tested by Mumsnet users and their kids. We hope you find it useful. Flowers

If you get a Frog secondhand it will retain value and you can sell it on again. They are definitely lighter and easier to learn on.

I wouldn’t. My son hardly touched his.

I deliberated for ages and ended up getting a cheap Chicco one for DD. She had no trouble with it and it gets bashed about a fair amount (she's not a gentle person!) so I'm glad I didn't spend a fortune on one. She is nearly 6 and still uses it round the garden even though she's too big for it really.

We got a £30 balance bike from Aldi and it's been brilliant and very robust! My son has used it SO MUCH and now has a big boy bike. We are going to put the balance bike in the loft for when his baby sister is older as it's still in excellent condition. Can't recommend enough. Not sure if Aldi still sell them though.

Yes I think they're worth it. As cloverleafy said, quality bikes hold their value and can be resold.
My son loved his balance bike, used it loads, and then took to a pedal bike immediately. Well worth it for us.

I always buy fancy lightweight bikes. Not for the kids, but for my poor old back having to lugg them about, in and out the car etc. Have had isla bikes/ squish and all seem to retain good value for resale.

my only advice is get one with real (inflatable) tyres. The solid plastic tyre ones aren't fun to ride.
