Birthday gift for DDs nursery friend who I hardly know?!

DD has been invited to her first nursery birthday party in aug. I don’t really know the mum / son so not sure what we could get him. I’ve asked her what her DS is into but she said it’s ok not to bring gift, just wants all the children to have fun together. But feel like I can’t turn up to a birthday party without a gift! Any ideas?

How old is the child?

Anything generic 🤷‍♀️

Nursery aged boy... paw patrol stuff, play doh (parents won’t like you but never mind) puzzles, a busy book, toy dinosaurs, garden skittles, paint your own money box

Chance are half of what he gets will be put in the cupboard to be regifted, so don’t waste too much energy thinking about it!

When we don't know the family or child well I always buy a book token as a gift, and include a little packet of stickers.

I’m in exactly the same situation!
I plan to go for either a book or one of the orchard games as they are lovely.
I just tried to think what I’d like to have in my house.

I have a 7 yo and a 3 yo so it’s a rare weekend we don’t have a party (we have 2 this weekend!) I buy a load of age appropriate gifts and cards and just pick out of them for each party, although I have started phasing this out for the oldest because he’s getting to the age where he’s a bit more aware of stuff his friends actually like so we can choose a specific present for them

Ooohh I do like the idea of a book! Never thought of that one.

How can you not have a clue what to buy for a child who is, presumably, the same or similar age as your own.

We've been to a few nursery parties this year and gifts I've bought are

Orchard games, Red dog blue dog was a favourite

Melissa and doug threading set

Melissa and doug magnets

Watering can

Story book (I tend to go for a new release as theres less chance of a duplicate)

Play doh (what ever amazon have on offer)

Op the works does packs of books if you think this might be the first of many

How old? For age 1-2 I'd be buying a book, top/tshirt (if I know what the parents tend to dress them in) or small Duplo/Playdoh set (if I know they use them). Orchard games for slightly older.

I just do a google search on "gifts for xxx year old girl / boy" and I get lots of suggestions.

Stock up on the works 10 for £10 books and their 20 for £1 cards. Having done this twice believe me it's easier when you'll end up in never ending parties with the whole class. Then when it all calms down and they become older and get their smaller friendship groups that's when you can do specific gifts.

They're nursery age. Their gender should be irrelevant when buying a gift. Books, as the overwhelming number of PP's on here have suggested, make excellent gifts.
