Interested in lego train for DS birthday but recommended age is 8+. Hornby seems too delicate for little people. Any ideas please? Budget up to £120.

Do you want a train set or just a train for him to build?

I think brio are better for building tracks but if you already have a set then lego would be a step up.

My 6 year old plays with his dad’s trains both Hornby and Lego. The hornby derails all the time and is a right pain in the neck to get back on. Dad has to play with him. The lego train is much more forgiving, doesn’t come off as much and is easier to get back. You can also put figures in and out and there’s no end to the things you can create around it.
You will probably need to help build the train, that will be the reason for the age range.
We’re buying our other son a new Lego train for his 4th birthday next month. He’ll get no joy from building so we’ll build it the night before and put it on the table

Yup just asked DH and he said no to Hornby at 5 unless someone in the house is into them

Hornby Trains are really cool but really only worth getting if you think this will become a life time hobby (or obsession). I would love to have one. I have a Duplo or for me but at 5 he might think it is 'babyish' (at 43 I am better at not caring what people think).
Lego would be a good one but the actual trains he would need someone to help build /build for him but once together it's great. Although this could become an expensive hobby too!
Can I come to his birthday? I wanna play trains!

In Lego I think the age rating is more to do with who they think can build it as opposed to who it's safe for.

Ds2 got the Lego train for Christmas last year, just before his 5th birthday. He was adamant for some months that's what he wanted and both boys ended up helping Daddy build it. It's just the right size for small hands - big but not overwhelming and they can play with it with minimal setup help now.
