Toys for a 4 year old boy?

He loves orchard toys, jigsaws and magnatiles and has just started getting into role play like playing shops and pretending to be fireman sam and rescuing his teddys and playing with his hulk gloves

What toys do you think are good for when they get to that role play stage?

Anyone?

When my DGD was that age, we had a little cash till with plastic money, and plastic fruits and stuff. She loved it. In fact we had to add all sorts of things from round the house for us to buy and sell

I meant to say that DGD and DH would 'set up shop' in the dining room and I would have to go in a 'customer', browse around and make polite chit chat.

Ooh, I got DS1 a fire engine tent from argos when he was younger. It was quite big too so perfect for being fireman Sam in.
Tills are good too.

Melissa & Doug do a box of hats which is great - growing out of them isn't as much of a problem and you can supplement with generic clothing that can be used for dressing up and the occasional costume if it's a particular favourite.

Superhero dressing up is popular with my 5 and 3 year olds (Batman etc). Lego Juniors is a great Lego range for 4 year olds.

I'm a fan of children using real money in role play to learn their coins. £1 of coppers goes a long way and then a few silver coins thrown in as they get a little older.

Doctors kits, little tool kits, empty sweet boxes taped up to be stock to sell (raisin packets, smarties tubes, mini/ individual cereal boxes etc)

Imaginext or playmobil are popular here.

DS is 4 and loves imaginary play. His medical kit gets a lot of use, I out plasters in there and he patches us up. The till and shopping stuff is a hit. He has a fire engines and helicopters he rescues his teddies with.

Playmobile. Small world play is an extension of role play - 4 was the age all my kids got into quite long running and complicated small world play with Playmobile - when the older two were 4 and 6 up until about 7 and 9 they used to take over the whole living room with Playmobile worlds, building whole communities and transport systems with boxes and books and non Playmobile toy cars and all sorts (we have a lot of books but don't hold them sacred, they can be house roofs and roads temporarily as long as they aren't bent or ripped and get put back :o )

I'd get him some Playmobile - mainly people and animals, the structures aren't necessarily worth the money especially if you have the kind of child who might dismantle them although my nearly 6 yo still loves the Playmobile house handed down from DC1 and plays with it a lot - it's lasted well unlike the stables and hospital

Playmobil, Lego and cars here. Oh and brio.

Outdoortoys.co.uk have got some really cool role play toys. There are some shop type ones and loads of kitchen-based ones.

I got my little one this pirate ship play set (www.outdoortoys.co.uk/kidkraft-pirate-s-cove-play-set) which went down an absolute storm!

Lego is the best thing but as your child is quite young I suggest duplo
