My Daughters 10th birthday is coming up and im a bit stuck! shes recently got into sewing (needle and thread type only so far) and i think she'd be so surprised and over the moon to get herself a lil sewing machine - she is a bit of a clumsy thing tho so not looking at an adults normal machine but....

this Totally Me Sewing Machine from Toys R Us

could anyone review this or recommend another? i dont want to mess it up by getting something rubbish. Thank you!

I know you said you don't want an adults one but I would consider it

My clumsy heavy handed I love her really 10 year old dd manages fine with a proper one, they use proper ones in high school and they will have more longevity

piggychops · 01/04/2015 06:58

I would also go for a basic adult one.

WorkingItOutForMyself · 01/04/2015 06:59

What about the mini John Lewis one?

goshhhhhh · 01/04/2015 07:00

I got my Dd the John Lewis one. It is v good.

Personally I'd look at a basic adult machine. Or be prepared to up grade quickly from the toy should she take to it. Working with a toy machine could quickly put her off if she's getting poor results with it.

My DD got an adult one for her 9th birthday and manages it really well, although she isn't clumsy. I still have to help with threading it but otherwise she can use it independently. It's a Brother, with 3 speed settings and dozens of different stitches which she loves experimenting with.

A lot of people are buying this for children of a similar age to your daughter. The reviews are worth a read.

Have you read the reviews of the one you're thinking about? Not exactly glowing!

I would get something like the John Lewis mini as well - a toy is just going to frustrate a 10 year old.

SpaghettiMeatballs · 01/04/2015 07:22

I agree. A basic adult one would be best.

Superexcited · 01/04/2015 07:26

I agree with getting a basic adult one. It is quite difficult to injure yourself with a modern machine even if you are very clumsy. She will quickly outgrow a children's machine and won't bother to use it.

We got my DD a basic John Lewis sewing machine when she was ten. They come in a great range of colours. We were recommended the larger size, not mini, as it is heavier when moving fabrics around. Our previous mini tipped over frequently.

Our DD loves it, and has made pillow cases, phone cases and cushion covers.

There's a mini one in ikea too. I'm getting it for DS2. It's got good reviews and it's nice and bright.
