cheap balance bike - any decent ones?

I'm looking for a balance bike for my son - he's 3 tomorrow, average height. We live really rurally so buying second hand ones off eBay isn't an option really.
Have read the other bike thread but was hoping not to spend more than £40.

We bought DS one from amazon, this one

www.amazon.co.uk/Kidzmotion-Jiggy-Wooden-Balance-Bike/dp/B004LM06L6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1385062717&sr=8-1&keywords=Jiggy+balance+bike

£34.99. Bought it a year and a half ago when he was 2. Still uses it most days, loves it and so many people comment on how lovely it is. Would highly recommend.

My friends bought their sons metal ones from halfords and they always want to ride ds's :)

Very cool, my ds would love that too. My only reserve is that there's no break - we live halfway up a really steep hill/mountain so I think a break is really important .cheaper than wearing shoes out every 5 mins...

I have a friend that has just taken pedals/ chains off a normal bike. Cheap 2nd one in the local paper?

not too cheap hopper balance bike but it has lasted well over 3 years and will keep on going for dd to use too.

the wheels are solid rubber too. we bought a different one that looked so cool for dd but when it arrived it had hollow plastic wheels, ok for the garden but will be wrecked by stones etc outside of the garden.

Ah yes you may need some brakes then. We live on a hill but DS knows not to go too fast (roads etc) so has always been able to easily slow down and stop with his feet.

Definitely be sure to get one with proper tyres and not just plastic. Smile

We've had this one for around 4 years - it's been well used by 2 children and is still going strong:

It has a brake but my DCs tend to use their feet too - although I guess using the brake has been good practice for moving onto a 'proper' bike.
