Tablet for second birthday?

Belle15 · 12/11/2013 11:09

My daughter is 2 in January and wondering if there are educational tablet type things worth getting ( bearing in mind she won't have a birthday between jan and the following Xmas) or is she far too young for them all? Wondering what people's experiences are? Don't want to spend loads either as money is quite tight Blush

I have a two year old and I would not let him near my iPad. He is content with Lego, play dough and mud puddles!

poocatcherchampion · 12/11/2013 11:18

colouring book might be a better bet?

HyvaPaiva · 12/11/2013 11:20

Genuine question. Do two year olds really get tablets these days? In fact, do two year olds really get to even use tablets? Shock

ReallyTired · 12/11/2013 11:21

I think that two years old is too young and invariably stuff gets smashed at that age.

If you have more money than sense then VTEC do some nice stuff that is reasonable child proof.

SavoyCabbage · 12/11/2013 11:21

I wouldn't either. Later on you could get hernia leapad or whatever they will be called in a few years but there is plenty of time for that. I got one for my dd when she was six.

When my dd was two she liked her toy buggy and brio pull along dog. Oh, and play doh.

SavoyCabbage · 12/11/2013 11:22

Her a not hernia!

GooseyLoosey · 12/11/2013 11:23

My children would have chewed one at that age. Definitely not.

Isildur · 12/11/2013 11:27

Well, I wouldn't have bought a tablet for a child just turning 2, but my 2 year old does use my iPad/Android one.

I think if you already own a tablet, it's not worth buying one as a gift at that age. Just add child-friendly apps to your own.

I'm not a fan of the V-Tech/Kurio/Leapster things, but if you were going to go down that route it's better to get them at 2ish. Many children will have outgrown them by the time they are four years old.

Thumbwitch · 12/11/2013 11:31

4 would be a better age than 2. I got DS1 a play/learn laptop (Vtech Lightning McQueen) for his 4th birthday/Christmas, because they are only 3 weeks apart, and while he was too young for it at 4, as the year progressed it became more useful to him.

Having said that, my 13mo has an absolute fascination with our tablet, and I was considering getting him his own for Christmas, not a real one but a touchscreen somethingorother toy that doesn't connect to the internet - just to keep him off ours!

No -really don't. there is some evidence that too much time on screens is detrimental to very young children. Besides, at that age she really won't be desperate for one or knowing that her peers have them.

Go for stuff that has imaginative play value - dressing up clothes, toy plates. cups, pans, pretend fruit and veg etc , dolls you can dress and undress (IKEA have some nice stuff that is not too pricy) duplo, wooden trains and track ( Brio or one of the cheaper versions) crayons and paper, paints if you don't mind supervising messy activities, chalkboard or whiteboard and chalk/pens - if you can get an easel version or put the board on a wall then even better as drawing vertically really helps children with early writing/mark making. Simple jigsaws are good too.

For a two year old??
Trains, dressing up clothes, one of your old handbags with some keys and purse in it,building blocks and a really big cardboard box are all great toys for 2 year olds. They have the rest of their lives to stare at screens.
Especially if money is tight.

She plays colouring and shape sorting apps on my phone so thought there might be a cheap toddler designed version of these sorts of games.she is getting a wooden play kitchen for Xmas so was thinking something different for her bday but u are probably right. May look into a micro mini scooter instead as our second option. It's so difficult with her bday so close to Xmas as have to think what will she be interested in in another 8 months etc to last the year iyswim. Thanks for all the comments! :)
