Maxi micro or micro sprite scooter for 5 year old?

I'm looking at getting DS a new scooter for his fifth birthday this summer to replace his mini micro scooter which I think he's starting to grow out of.

Not sure to go with a maxi - just a bigger and more expensive version of what he has, or the two-wheeled sprite, which also steers differently.

It would be useful to hear from anyone who opted for one over the other.

We debated this for a long time before my daughters 4th birthday and in the end we went for a blue sprite. I am so happy with this decision as she has used it every day, it folds up easily for storage (at pre school, or under her sisters pram), it is fast and looks great. Her previous scooter was a four wheeler though so she already knew how to use the steering.

The sprite is sturdy enough for adults too so we have all had a go. Great fun! I really would recommend it, especially as it saves a few pounds.

Thanks islandtime. I am veering towards the sprite at the moment but I keep changing my mind! He uses his scooter loads, so I want to get something he'll enjoy using. I did think that the different steering mechanism will help him get the hang of his bike, which he struggles a bit with.

DS had sprite for 5th birthday, after having had a mini micro. There was a bit of a learning curve as he had to learn to balance the sprite which he hadn't with the mini.

However, he is now nearly 7 and I can see the sprite being used for many yrs to come, so glad we went for it. They are sturdy and it still looks good after nearly 2 yrs.

DS also got a bike for Christmas last year and easily took to riding it without stabilisers, poss because he was already used to balancing a scooter.

Thanks rhinestonecowgirl that's really useful. DS has never shown that much interest in his balance bike until recently, so I did think the sprite would help with steering and balance.

Interestingly DS's younger sister has inherited the mini micro, (she's 4) but is much more interested in her balance bike, fairly whizzes along, whereas on the scooter she's more leisurely...

And DS never wanted a balance bike so we went straight to normal bike at 6.

My ds went from the mini to the maxi on his 6th bday. Dd got a maxi for her 4th birthday. They are really fast on them, and I prefer the stability when they go fast. I bought myself the micro kick board so I could keep up with them! I prefer them so we can get places quickly, kids use them daily. They just prefer them over two wheeled ones. If price is a factor they are the more expensive option, but whichever you chose I am sure it will be loved!

Thanks for that Londonseye. Price isn't a massive factor, but I'm loathe to pay all that money for a maxi if he'd be happy on a sprite!
